Paragraph by Analogy

A paragraph by analogy compares two different things on the basis of their

similarities in certain aspects. It is used most effectively in explaining difficult or
unknown concepts. This kind of paragraph development premises its explanation on the
unfamiliar or unknown, so that the logical order is the best type of sequencing to use.

An analogy is a comparison in which idea or a thing is compared to another thing

that id quite different from it. It aims at explaining that idea or thing by comparing it to
something that is familiar. Metaphors and similes are tools used to draw comparisons
between seemingly unlike people, items, places, or situations. Writers use analogies to
help clarify a point. Therefore, analogy is more extensive and elaborate than either a
simile or a metaphor. Consider the following the following examples:

1. Life is like a race. The one who keeps running wins the race and the one who
stops to catch a breath loses

2. Just as a sword is the weapon of a warrior, a pen is the weapon of a writer.

3. How a doctor diagnoses diseases is like how a detective investigates crimes.

4. Just as a caterpillar comes out of its cocoon, so we must come out of our
comfort zone.

5. You are annoying as nails on a chalkboard.

An analogy paragraph is an extended comparison between objects or

ideas from different classes or thing which are not associated. Analogy is
particularly effective in explaining unfamiliar or abstract concepts because a
comparison can be drawn between what is familiar and what is not.

Example

The Ant and the Grasshopper

 For me, I am more like an ant than a grasshopper. Ants are eager to search
for food. They are industrious in order to find food for their own survival. Just like
me, I am also eager to finish my study. I am trying to be industrious in order to
finish my my paper works, assignments, projects and others just in time before
the dead line. Ants are always prepared for the coming of typhoon. As long as
the sun is shining, they don’t stop searching and collecting food. Same goes for
me as I prepare myself to the possible problems that I may encounter. I am
collecting courage and hope, by praying so that if the problem comes, I may
have some ideas so solve it. Ants are organized in a way that they arrange
themselves in a line to avoid chaos. I also arrange my things orderly to prevent
the loss of my things. I also plan what I have to do the next day. This way, I
could keep track of my activities and I could allot more time in reviewing if there
is a quiz or examination ahead. Ants also show brotherhood and unity for they
help each other for their survival. Just like me, I am trying to develop my social
skills in order to make many friends. I am trying to help others if they have a
problem. Grasshoppers, from the famous fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper”,
are directly opposite to ants. They are mean and lazy. May be because their
food is abundant so they don’t have to search for food. I know myself not to b
lazy. I know I always strive harder and try my best to accomplish something. I
know I am more like ants than grasshoppers.
