I. TOPIC: Probability

II. MELCs: Finds the probability of a simple event

III. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

A. Illustrates an experimental and theoretical probability
B. Solves problems involving probabilities of simple events

IV. REFERENCE: A. Math 8,Textbook (REX)

C. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probability

V. MATERIALS: Pen and Notebook

VI. CONCEPT:

PROBABILITY

- is a numerical description of how likely an event is to occur or how likely is that a proposition is
true.
- we name a probability with a number from 0 to 1.
- we can even express probability in percentage.
- if an event is certain to happen, then the probability of the event is 1.
- if an event is certain not to happen, then the probability of the event is 0.
- is a measure of the likelihood of an event A occurring in one experiment or trial and it
is denoted by P (A)

number of ways that the event A can occur (A )

P (A) = total number of outcomes ( S)

n( A)
= n (S)

Definition of Terms:

Experiment: It is a process or activity which produces a number of possible outcomes

Outcome: It is a possible result of an experiment or trial.

Sample space: It is the set of all possible outcomes that result of the experiment.

Event: Is a set of outcomes of an experiment. It is just a subset of sample space.

Examples:

What is the probability of getting head in tossing a coin?

Experiment: Tossing a coin

Outcome: Head or Tail

Sample Space: {H , T }

number of ways that the event A can occur (A )

Formula: P (A) = total number of outcomes ( S)

1
P (A) = 2 = 0.5 = 50%

What is the probability of getting an even number in rolling a die?

Experiment: Rolling a die

Outcome: 2, 4, and 6

Sample Space: {1 , 2 ,3 , 4 ,5 ,6 }

number of ways that the event A can occur (A )

Formula: P (A) = total number of outcomes ( S)

3 1
P (A) = 6 = 2 = 0.5 = 50%

VII. Activity:

Answer the following. Show your solution.

1. What is the probability of getting a face cards and diamond cards in a deck of cards
without joker?

2. What is the probability of getting a prime number in rolling a die?

VIII. Evaluation
Read the questions carefully. Show your solution.
1. What is the probability of getting atleast one tail in tossing two coins at the same time?
2. What is the probability of getting an even number of cards in a deck of cards without joker?
IX. Reflection
As HCCS’ian, What did you learn in this lesson that can be apply in real-life?
