Developing Models

Use the blank periodic table below to help identify the number of valence electrons for a given “element”

*** Assumption is that Group 7A is the most electronegative.

1. Draw the Lewis dot structure with dipoles 2. Draw the Lewis dot structure with dipoles
(if any) for: KJ2 (if any) for: FK32-

3. Draw two molecules of CCl2O (one has been given to you).
i. Show the predominant intermolecular attraction between two molecules of CCl2O. Draw the
second molecule of CCl2O. Be sure to identify the dipoles for each molecule.
j. Identify and LABEL the specific type of attraction (IMF) that you are representing in your
model.

4. Which of these correctly depicts a hydrogen bond with dashed lines? Circle your choice and EXPLAIN.

O
The two molecules do not have the same element surrounding it,
meaning that both of them are polar. This means that the model is
either a dipole-dipole, or a hydrogen bond. However, since the
molecules are bonded by Nitrogen and Hydrogen, they form a
hydrogen bond, since if hydrogen bonds with Flourine, Nitrogen, or
Oxygen, there will be a hydrogen bond.

Constructing Explanations

1. Using your knowledge of intermolecular forces, explain the trend in boiling points for the following series of
compounds.

State your claim The more electronegativity there is, the higher the boiling point will be.

HCI f 85J lowest
Reasoning: When compound is boiling, it shifts from a liquid state of matter to a gas.
● Accurately apply chemistry However, in order for that to happen, all of the molecule’s intermolecular forces
concepts to support the need to be broken. But, the stronger the intermolecular forces there are, the
claim (polarity, attraction, harder it is to break them, hence why the boiling point will be higher. For
electronegativity, example, HCl has the lowest boiling point because it has lowest polarity,
intermolecular forces, how
meaning that the atoms are not very attracted to each other and there is not
does boiling occur?)
much electronegativity, which is why the boiling point is so low since there is
● Connecting evidence to the
claim not much force needed in order for the intermolecular forces to be broken.
However, HF has the highest boiling point because there is lots of
electronegativity, since there is a hydrogen bond. Hydrogen bonds are the
strongest intermolecular forces, meaning that they have the most
electronegativity, and they need lots of force in order to be broken, which why
the boiling point is so high. Thus, the more electronegativity is present, the
higher the boiling point will be.

2. Which substance below would be expected to dissolve best in water? EXPLAIN.

O
Lewis dot of CH4 Lewis Dot of C3H6O Lewis Dot of SiO2

C3H60 would dissolve the best in water. This is true because siO2 and CH4
are non-polar molecules, and non-polar molecules only dissolve with other
non-polar molecules. Since water is not non-polar, the molecules will continue
to be attracted to each other and will not dissolve in water. However, since
C3H60 is polar, speci cally a dipole-dipole, it will dissolve in water because it
will be more attracted to H20.
