GRAMMAR
APOSTROPHE’S - (‘S): POSSESSIVE CASE - GENITIVE CASE

What is the Apostrophe s?

The Apostrophe S is normally used to show possession, that there is a

relationship between two things or that something belongs to another.

-John’s car (= The car of John. The car belongs to John)

Singular nouns
Add -’s

-We went to Ange’s house last night.

-Have you seen the dog’s bone?

Plural nouns ending in -s

Only add the apostrophe -’

-I went to my friends’ party. (= the party of your friends)

-My cousins’ house is always a mess. (= your cousins)

Plural nouns not ending in -s

Add -’s

-The children’s toys are all over the room.

-The men’s toilet was disgusting.

Singular nouns ending in -s

Add -’s

-The actress’s role was very difficult.

No noun
Sometimes the noun after -’s is not necessary when the meaning is clear.

-My car is older than John’s. (=John’s car)

29
sedacollegeonline.com.br

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES

SUBJECT PRONOUN POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVE

YOUR = Possessive adjective
I have a shirt. My shirt is green.
-You need to bring your book.
You have a book. Your book is new.
YOU’RE = You are (Contraction)
He has a pillow. His pillow is soft.
-You’re an excellent student.
She has a dog. Her dog is small.
ITS = Possessive adjective
It has a bone. Its bone is old.
-The dog played with its ball.
We have a bird. Our bird is noisy.
IT’S = It is (Contraction)
You have a house. Your house is big.
-It’s very hot right now.
They have a car. Their car is slow.

The possessive adjective needs to agree with the possessor and not with the thing that is possessed.

Examples:

My car is very old. Her boyfriend is very friendly. Our dog is black.

Like all adjectives in English, they are always located directly in front of the noun they refer to.
(Possessive Adjective + Noun)

We do not include an S to the adjective when the noun is plural like in many other languages.

Examples:

Our cars are expensive. (Correct) Ours cars are expensive. (Incorrect)

However, the verb that is used needs to be in agreement with the noun - if the noun is singular then
the verb is singular; if the noun is plural then the verb is plural.

Examples:

My pen is black. (Singular) My pens are black. (Plural)

Our child is intelligent. (Singular) Our children are intelligent. (Plural)

ADJECTIVES
Adjectives tell us something about a person or a thing.

Adjectives can modify nouns or pronouns/names.

PERSON THING

Mandy is a careful girl. This is a nice car.

Mandy is careful. The car is nice.

She is careful. It is nice.

An adjective can be put before the noun. Then it is an attribute.

PERSON THING

Mandy is a careful girl. This is a nice car.

An adjective can be put after the verb to be (is). This is called predicative position.

PERSON THING

The girl is beautiful This car is fast

IMPORTANT

Adjectives can go after the following verbs:

appear become feel get go keep turn

When we speak about what something looks like, smells, sounds and tastes – we use the adjective.
Mind the difference between adjective and adverb.

I feel great.
She looks good.
It seems impossible.
The steak smells fantastic.

COLORS (American English) / COLOURS (British English)

BROWN
RED
ORANGE
YELLOW
GREEN
BLUE
PURPLE
GRAY
WHITE
BLACK
IMPORTANT:

What is the difference between Gray and Grey?

The same as with the difference between color and colour, it depends on the country.

The word Gray is used in the United States.

The word Grey is used in the rest of the English-speaking countries (England, Australia, NZ etc.)

Word order with colours

There are three ways that you can use a colour in a sentence to describe something:

1. To Be + Colour. e.g. My car is blue.

2. Colour + Noun. e.g. The blue car is mine.

3. Colour is the Noun. e.g. Blue is the colour of my car.

Did you know that, because colours give us more information about a person or a thing, they are
adjectives in English?

GRAMMAR
CAN OR CAN’T
Can is a modal verb.
Can is used to express ability or to say that something is possible.
Can is the same for all subjects. We don’t add an ‘S’ in the third person (like other verbs)

Affirmative:
The verb that comes after Can is in the infinitive without to:
-I can speak Spanish. (= it is possible for me to speak Spanish = I have the ability to speak Spanish)
-Lauren can swim well.
USES OF CAN
-They can see their neighbour in the yard .
-We can play the piano. 1- Ability or possibility:
- I can swim.
Negative 2- Permission:
To form the negative we add “not” after can to form one word: cannot. - You can use my pen.
We can also contract the negative to form can’t.
CAN + VERB
See the use: Can’t = Cannot
He can speak English.
-I cannot play the guitar.
He can speaks English.
-She cannot speak French very well.
He can to speak English
-He can’t drive a car.
-You can’t go to the cinema tonight.

Interrogative CONTRACTIONS
To form questions we change the position of the subject and
can’t = cannot
the auxiliary verb.
He can’t sing = He cannot sing
The main verb is still in the infinitive without to.
-Can I go to the party, please?
QUESTIONS
-Can you speak French?
-What can we do on Monday? + AFFIRMATIVE
-Where can I buy a new bike? They can speak Spanish

Short Answers ? QUESTION

Remember that you can use short answers: Can they speak Spanish?
-Can I sit here please? Yes, you can.
-Can you speak Chinese? No, I can’t. SHORT ANSWER
Yes, they can / No, they can’t

65
sedacollegeonline.com.br

AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE

I can speak English I can’t speak French

You can ride a bike You can’t ride a horse
He can drive a car He can’t drive a truck
She can play the guitar She can’t play the piano
It can swim It can’t fly

We can play football We can’t play tennis

You can see the stars You can’t see germs
They can dance They can’t sing

OBJECTIVE PRONOUNS
Subjects are what the sentence is about. They refer to a person or a thing.
Objects are what is affected by the action of the subject.
Examples:
I like orange juice. ( I is the subject ).
I read books. (Books is the object as it is receiving the action).
I read them. (Them is the object pronoun substitutes the noun:books).

SUBJECT PRONOUN OBJECT PRONOUN

Object pronouns are used instead of nouns,
I ME
usually because we already know what the
YOU YOU
object is. It makes the sentence easier to read
HE HIM
and understand and avoids repetition. We
SHE HER
normally use object pronouns after a verb or a
IT IT
preposition.
WE US
YOU YOU
THEY THEM

The Object Pronoun - it

Be careful when using ‘it’ as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that it has
meaning. It needs to have already been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you are referring
to.
Examples: You are sitting on it! (The listener probably knows the remote control is on the sofa, for example).

A: Where is the remote control?

B:You are sitting on it!
(B =The listener, probably knows the remote control is on the sofa, so he/she uses the object pronoun: it).
