Q.1. Why water is called universal solvent ?


Ans. Water is known as universal solvent because variety of substances dissolve in it. It
dissolves more substances than any other liquid .

GIVE REASONS
1. Milk is said to be a mixture because it has proteins, fats and water. It is possible to separate
its components.
2. When a saturated solution is heated it will dissolve a little more of solute.

Q.1.How is residue different from filtrate ?


Ans. In the process of evaporation the liquid that passes through the filter paper is called filtrate
and the insoluble impurities which remain on the filter paper are called the residue.

Q.2. How will you get a clear and clean water from dirty pond water? Explain.
Ans. By the combination of three methods –
a) Sedimentation
b) Decantation
c) Filtration

Q.3 Can you separate sugar from sugar solution by filtration? Give reason.
Ans. No, as the size of sugar particles is very small, so they can easily pass through the filter
paper.

Q.4 Bhavya’s science teacher asked her to add given solids into separate beakers of water
and stir. The solids were – sugar, salt, sand, wood shavings, chalk powder and iron filings.
Categorise the type of mixtures obtained as homogeneous and heterogeneous.
