READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Write your Name, Class and Index number on all the work you hand in.
Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper.
You may use a soft pencil for any diagrams or graphs.
Do not use paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid.

Answer all the questions.

Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles
in degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.
You are expected to use a graphic calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are required to
present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator commands.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

At the end of the examination, attach the question paper to the front of your answer script.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

11 A sequence of real numbers x1 , x2 , x3 ,... satisfies the recurrence relation

 1 
  xn  2 
xn 1   xn 
where  is a real constant and x1  1 .
It is given that the sequence converges for one of these two cases:

2 6
 
Case 1: 3 and Case 2: 5.
(i) Use your calculator to find the values of x2, x3, x4 and x5, correct to 2 decimal
places for each of two above values of  . Hence state which value of 
causes the sequence to converge. [3]

(ii) As n  , xn  d . Taking the  value in part (i) that causes the sequence to
converge, find the exact value d. [3]

Find the area of triangle ABC, correct to 3 significant figures. [3]

Hence determine the length of the perpendicular from B to the side AC of the

(b) The lines l1 and l2 have equations

(b) A chemist is experimenting on a new type of anti-bacterial spray. In a container

of 5 10 bacteria, this spray is activated every 40 min from the start of the
8

experiment. Each spray instantly kills 90% of the bacteria present at that time.

The number of bacteria multiplies by 2 times every 20 min from the start of the
experiment.

(You may assume that whenever the spray is activated, the bacteria multiplies
first before it gets killed.)

immediately after the first spray has been activated. [2]

(ii) It is given that Bn represents the number of bacteria left immediately after
40n min. For example, B1  number of bacteria left immediately after
40min, B2  number of bacteria left immediately after 80min and so on.

Bn  (5  108 )(0.4).
[2]
(iii) Find the number of bacteria left immediately after 240 min. [2]

(iv) State, with justification, whether the spray is effective in controlling the
bacterial growth after a long period of time. [2]
