Q.1 How do you prove that air supports burning ?

Ans .
i. Fix two small candles .
ii. Light both the candles and cover one of them with inverted glass .
iii. The candle which is covered extinguishes .
iv. This is because burning can occur only in the presence of oxygen .
v. When the oxygen in the jar is used up , the candle no longer burns , while the other
candle keeps on burning.

Q.2.Describe the role of the atmosphere

Ans. Role of the atmosphere;
i) The atmosphere maintains the temperature of the earth and hence it saves the earth
from becoming either too cold or too hot.
ii) The atmosphere causes the weather change.

Q.3. What is air pollution?

Ans .Pollutants such as smoke and harmful gases when released into air causes air pollution .
Q.4. What causes acid rain ? Name the gases responsible for it .
Ans. When the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen combine with rain water, they make rain water
acidic. It results acid rain .Acid rain damages our monuments ,crops and fertility of soil.
Q.5. Why the earth’s temperature increasing day by day ?
Ans. The oxide of carbon traps the heat and thus the temperature of atmosphere is increasing
day by day . It causes global warming .
Q.6. List the diseases caused due to air pollution.
Ans. Air pollution leads to many diseases:
i) Asthma
ii) Bronchitis
iii) Lung cancer
iv) And many other respiratory diseases.

Ans. Ways to reduce air pollution are :
i) Save trees
ii) Afforestation
iii) Use public transport
iv) Maintenance of vehicles
v) To practice 3 R’s
vi) To ban burning of crops, waste materials, plastics , and crackers in air .
