Part 2

1. A. Total internal reflection is when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical
angle. Therefore there is no refraction since it surpasses 90 degrees and it will no longer
be in the medium.

B. Critical angle is the max angle of incidence to produce an angle of refraction of 90

degrees. It occurs when light travels from a denser medium to a less dense medium.

C. aNg=Ca/Cg
aNg=3.0×10^8 m/s ÷ 2.0 × 10^8 m/s
aNg=1.5

D. C=Sin-1(1÷n)
C=Sin-1(1÷1.5)
C=41.8°
C=42°

E. Diagram

2. A. aNg=Sin i ÷ Sin r
1.6=Sin60÷Sin r
Sin r=Sin60÷1.6
r=Sin-1(Sin60÷1.6)
r=32.75°
r=33°

B. C=Sin-1(1÷n)
C=Sin-1(1÷1.6)
C=38.68°
C=39°

C. =90-r
=90-33
=57°
It is reflected since total internal reflection occurred since the angle of incidence(57°) is
greater than the critical angle (39°) therefore the angle of refraction surpasses the 90°.
So it will no longer be travelling in the medium.
