Role-play
(Props: Harry Hat Man's hat and a Sammy Snake headband or toy snake.)
Choose two children to be Sammy Snake and Harry Hat Man. Sammy stands a
few paces to Harry's right as they stand facing the class.
What sound does Sammy Snake usually make in words? Yes, he likes to hiss /
sss/ very loudly. How does the Hat Man feel about noise? That's right, he hates
it! So what do you think happens when Sammy comes slithering and sliding up
behind Harry Hat Man in a word? What do you think Harry does? He turns his
head and says /sh/ to hush Sammy up.
Ask all the children to do the sh action with one finger raised to the lips as they
say the sound. You could pair them all up to role-play Sammy Snake and Harry
Hat Man.
Show the picture side of the sh PCC and ask a child to re-tell what is
happening.
sh
Push the plain letter side forward several times for children to repeat, “/sh/ Picture Code Cards
/sh/ /sh/” with the action.

the children to hunt for items in the scene that include the /sh/ sound.
The Beyond ABC story and scene are provided in this

Reading and fluency

'Tricky' word
see
Teach the 'tricky' word see* with the PCCs for s and ee. Tell children that Mr E 'Tricky' word
has a twin brother they will learn more about later. Show them the word card
see and say, For now, just remember that whenever we see two of the same
letter in a row, the second one will be silent. So in this word we hear just Mr E
saying his name, but when we write the word we need to add his brother.
* The word see becomes decodable after Lesson 64.
Phonics Readers 2a: Shep Story provided in Sample Lesson (p8).

very loudly. How does Harry Hat Man feel about noise? That’s right, he hates

Absolutely not! He turns back and says, “sh!” to hush Sammy up.

Sammy came slithering up behind Harry at the seashore today, hissing loudly,
so Harry had to say, “sh!” again. Sammy and Harry like to sit in the sunshine
and look at all the things by the shore. They can see shells, shrimps and
fish in the sea. Those fish should keep a sharp eye out for that shark in the
shallow water! Can you see the shepherd shearing his sheep? There are four
shy sheep who don’t want to be sheared. Can you find them for him?
