President Director
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The soil investigation survey research area was conducted in the Mining Business License for
Specific Production Operation (IUP OPK) Areas of PT. Phoenix Alumina Industry, Tanjung
Baik Budi village, District of Matan Hilir Utara, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan.

PT Phoenix Alumina Industry planned to build an industrial alumina refinery facility. In the
early stages, PT Pheonix Alumina Industry carried out land acquisition activities and
continued with land investigation activities which were the initial data necessary for the
factory structural design and engineering planning. The investigation method performed
including Core Drilling (using drilling machines), SPT (Standard Penetration Test) data
collection, CPT (Cone Penetration Test) data collection, and Laboratory Testing. This soil
investigation report will be used to support geotechnical planning such as the bearing capacity
of the excavation foundation and slope stability.

Based on field survey and data processing, there are several type of soil which consist of peat
layer, silt, and sand. These layers have a thickness variation ranged from 2 to 10 meters.
Standard Penetration Test (STP) was performed to find out the hardness of the layers. The
SPT was performed at the bore hole in the intervals of 2 meters, with the value obtained varies
from 2 to > 50.

Based on the investigation results of Cone Penetration Test, the average cone resistance value
of 150 kg / cm2 was found at the depth of 10 to 19 meters. Laboratory testing on undisturbed
soil samples (UDS) results shows that the index property of cohesive soil in general has a
high plasticity and the presents of water (moisture content) from varying depths. Based on the
soil mechanics tests, the results show a phi (Φ) value of 3.262o - 15,855o and average cohesive
of (c) 4,609 - 53,64 kN / m2.

The calculation of the bearing capacity of the foundation uses several methods including the
Meyerhof’s method, the Van Der Ween’s method and the Luciano Decourt’s method. Based
on the soil investigation result, it is suggested that the type of foundation used is the pile type.
In general, the results of the allowable bearing capacity calculation, the pile type that can be
used is the round pile foundation with the diameter of 30 cm.

5.1 Core Drilling
Core drilling is conducted using 1 (one) spindle type drilling machine (MJBK-32K) which is
driven by diesel engine. The drill bit and the core barrel was rotated by the machine by an
intermediary of 1.5” diameter and 3 meters long drill rods. The pressure from the machine is
causing the ground to break and loose. To penetrate hard soil layers, such as rock, limestone,
solid sand, etc., the drill bit are replaced with sharper and harder one, namely tungsten bits and
to penetrate very hard rock layers the drill bits are replaced with diamond bits (Figure 2). The
six drilling points are stated as DHS-GT01, DHS-GT02, DHS-GT03, DHS-GT04, DHS-G05,
and DHS-GT06, with the depth of each drill hole of 25 meters (Table 3 and Figure 1).

5.2 Undisturbed Soil Sampling (UDS)
Undisturbed Soil Sample (UDS) is taken to obtain several values for the index properties and
the structural properties of the soil layers from a certain depth. In order to obtain the proper
result, the sample is taken by preserving their original condition below the ground. This
undisturbed sample is generally taken with a single core barrel or double core barrel type with
an outer diameter of 73 mm and an inner diameter of 63 mm. The sampler tube is made of
hard steel which is inserted starting from the bottom of the borehole until the sample tube is
completely filled with real soil enter it using SPT hammer, in this test UDS can only be used
for soft soil types, but in general the disturbed soil sample obtained from the tube barrel
sample is quite representative for visual soil identification (Figure 3)

Figure 3 Sampling of UDS before being covered with wax

5.3 SPT (Standard Penetration Test) Examination

Standard Penetration Test is performed by driven down a special tube called ‘split spoon
sampler tube’ by blows from a slide hammer of 63.5 Kg, falling from the height of 76.2 cm.
The sampler tube is driven down 45 cm into the ground, and the number of blows is recorded
for every 15 cm of penetration. The special sampler tube is in the form of a standard soil
sampling tube that can be split or an intact soil sampling tube. The size of this SPT tube are
detailed below:
• Outer Diameter 2 inch.
• Inner Diameter 1 3/8 inch.
• Length 24 inch.

The intermediate rod used is a 3/8-inch drill rod, connected to the hammer weighing 63.5 kg,
which is dropped freely with a height of 76.2 cm as can be seen in Figure 4 and Figure 5.

Figure 4 Standard Penetration Tube (SPT) Tube

Figure 5 SPT Hammer 63,5 kg

The hammer is dropped freely to the top end of the rod repeatedly until it penetrates 15 cm
into the ground, and then the number of blow is recorded. This process was repeated for the
next 2 x 15 cm depth. The SPT blows value for the last 2 x 15 cm penetration is stated as the
N value.

All equipments and procedures used in this investigation generally follow SNI or ASTM
standards.

5.4 Cone Penetration Test (CPT)
The Cone Penetration Test is performed with reference to the SNI 2827-2008 standard. It is
carried out to acquire the tip resistance/compressive strength at the tip of the cone (qc) and the
sleeves friction (fs). This test is implemented in order to find out the depth of hard soil layer
and the bearing capacity and adhesion characteristic of soil underground. The tool used in this
test is called ‘Dutch Cone Penetrometer’ with the bicones capacity of 2.5 tons (Table 4 and
Figure 6).

The CPT test is stopped if the following conditions are found:

• Meassurement on the menometer 3 times in a row shows values > 150 kg / cm2.
• The CPT tool is lifted upwards while the manometer reading has not shown the
maximum number, then the sondir tool is weighted.

In general, the implementation of CPT in this investigation. follows the SNI and ASTM
standards.

6 Laboratory Testing
Laboratory testing is an additional classification testing, consisting of several tests, including:

1. Atterberg Limits
2. Particle Size Distribution / Sieve Analysis
3. Density
4. Unit Weight
5. Moisture Content

As well as several tests related to the mechanical strength of the soil, including:

1. Direct Shear Test

2. Unconfined Compression Test
3. Consolidation Test

6.1 Atterberg Limits

Atterberg limits test can be conducted on cohesive soil sample after the sample is dried out
and separated or filtered using sieve number 40. The soil samples are mixed with different
amounts of water.

The liquid limit (LL) and plastic limit (PL) is determined according to the ASTM and SNI
standards.

Final Roport Revisi 00
Soil Ivestigation September 2020
PT Pheonix Alumina Industry Site: Ketapang
6.2 Particle Size Distribution / Sieve Analysis
Distribution of soil grain size can be conducted by sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis, or
both. The weight percentage of various grain sizes in excess of 74 microns was obtained based
on ASTM standards. The sieve is moved horizontally or vertically by means of a shaker
driven either manually or electrically.

The filters used, based on ASTM standard, are number 4, 10, 20, 40, 80, 100, and 200. If there
are a sufficiently large number of grain sizes smaller than 74 microns, this test has to be
completed with a hydrometer analysis, where the soil sample is mixed with water and then
stirred using a mixer for approximately 15 minutes. Additives are used to prevent the grains
from clumping. The soil sample in the container (measuring cup) is then measured with a
hydrometric device at certain times, so that the distribution of grain sizes of the settled grains
can be determined.

6.3 Density (Gs)

The soil grain density is determined using a special bottle called pycnometer, with the
capacity of 50cc. First, it is necessary to know the weight of the empty bottle and the weight
of the bottle filled with distilled water so that the volume weight of the water can be
determined.

The bottle then filled partially with distilled water and mixed with dry soil sample which has
been weighted beforehand, then vacuumed, and then filled with distilled water to the brim and
weighted. The unit weight and grain weight of the soil are calculated at a temperature of 20ºC.
This test was carried out in accordance with the ASTM and SNI standards.

6.4 Unit Weight

The unit weight is calculated from the wet weight and dry weight of soil sample which has
been compacted at a measured container. The dry weight value is acquired by dring out the
wet soil sample in an oven for 24 hours, at 105o C – 110o C.

6.5 Moisture Content

Meassurement of water content in soil samples is carried out by drying the wet soil sample for
24 hours at a temperature of 105ºC to 110ºC. Weight loss due to the drying process is the
weight of water contained in the soil sample. The water content is expressed as a ratio of

Final Roport Revisi 00
Soil Ivestigation September 2020
PT Pheonix Alumina Industry Site: Ketapang
water weight to the dry weight of the soil. This test was carried out in accordance with ASTM
and SNI standards.

6.6 Direct Shear Test

This test is conducted using an apparatus known as shear box or sliding box. The soil sample
is weighted and then filled into the shearbox. The shearbox then prepared to be tested at the
direct shear apparatus. The shearbox cap is connected to the vertical strain gauge so that the
given normal stress can be measured. The horizontal stress then applied by turning the strain
crank, which also connected to the proving ring so the stress applied can be measured. The
average shear stress, both normal (vertical) and shear in the plane represent the the maximum
stress and residual stress of the soil, as it is one of the soil condition parameters needed.

By repeating the test at different normal loads, a soil strength line is obtained which shows the
cohesion value (c) and the inner shear angle (Φ).

6.7 Unconfined Compression Test

The Unconfined Compression test is carried out with vertical stresses where the soil sample is
tested in a cylindrical tube without any supporting plates. This test is usually applied on an
undisturbed soil sample (UDS). The vertical stress results in a shear failure in the soil sample,
which is considered as an infinite compressive strength (qu) and the shear strength value of
the wet sample will be the half of unconfined compression value.

This unconfined compressive test was applied on both undisturbed soil sample and disturbed
sample. From the value of the maximum compressive strength that can be received in each
sample, the soil sensitivity will be obtained. This sensitivity value measures how the soil
behaves towards external disturbance.

6.8 Consolidation Test

The properties of soil consolidation and compaction can be determined by performing an
Oedometer test which is often referred to as a one-dimensional compaction test or a
consolidation test. This experiment was carried out mainly in order to obtain the relationship
chart between load and its settlement.

Prepared by PT Moluccas Borneo Energy 11

Final Roport Revisi 00
Soil Ivestigation September 2020
PT Pheonix Alumina Industry Site: Ketapang
The compaction index Cc and Cs can be obtained from the charts for each increase in load, the
consolidation coefficient Cv can be determined from the relationship chart between time and
its settlement. The chart of settlement load is expressed as void ratio, with the stress applied
are in semi-logarithmically.

7 Subsurface Conditions and Profile

7.1 Soil Classification
Soil description is conducted in the field based on a visual observation of the core sample and
the SPT value, and then adjusted to the laboratory results. Based on the results of visual
observations in the field, the subsurface layer can be divided into 2 (two) layer units, namely;
Unit 1, which is the fine-grained soil, and Unit 2 the coarse-grained soil. Each layer unit is
then divided into several sub-units based on the consistency value of soil hardness and
strength (Table 5).

Table 5 Subsurface Soil Classificatication

Soil Description Concistency SPT Correction

Soft 4-10
with low to high plassticity
2 Coarse grainded layer (sand and Stiff to Verry Stiff 10-30

7.2 Cone Penetration Test (CPT) Result Interpretation

Soil layer interpretation based on CPT data results are performed using the classification
method by Robertson et al (2010), which is implemented in the CPeT-IT computer software.
Robertson et al have compiled a chart of soil characteristics (WNB) which can be seen in
Figure 7. This classification is based on cone’s tip resistance, qt or qc on a log scale with a
friction ration (Fr) at normal scale.

9 Analysis and Recommendation
Based on the data both from site investigation and laboratory result, it can be concluded that
the soils layers are generally in the quite similar condition on each bore holes. The observation
results of drilling, standard penetration test (SPT) and cone penetration test (CPT) shows that
the surface layer down to the depth of 12 meters are soft layers consist of silt and clay, with
the N-SPT value ranged from 2 – 30. Specifically at the DHS-GT05 bore hole, the soft layer
was found down to the depth of 15 meters, which comprises organic clay soil.

Despite its soft characteristic, the overall soil condition is in decent condition especially for
structural foundation supports (bearing layer). This is indicated by the average N-SPT value of
>4.

What identified as the potential problem is the existence of clay soil, which has a very good
bearing capacity when in dry condition but on the contrary when in saturated condition.
Therefore, the selection and determination of foundation type, dimension, and depth are of
important aspect in structural planning and construction.

9.1 The Analysis of Soil Bearing Capacity

Planning result of Foundation type, depth and dimension based on the SPT value can be
compared with the result acquired based on the physical and mechanical properties of the soil
from the laboratory test. The foundation bearing capacity calculation based on the laboratory
data can be performed by applying the Meyerhof’s Method. The Meyerhof’s method
calculation is based on the phi (ɸ), cohesion (c) and soil unit weight (ꙋs).

Consolidation test also performed on undisturbed silt and clay samples (UDS) in order to
calculate the pontential foundation settlement and duration of the settlement that is likely to
occur. The soil bearing capacity determination based on site investigation can be performed
by using SPT and CPT result, as suggested by Bowles (1997).

The soil bearing capacity is calculated to help engineer determine the deep foundation type.
The soil bearing capacity calculation is implemented by utilizing 3 methods, the Standard
Penetration Test (SPT), Cone Penetration Test (CPT) and Laboratory test result.

9.1.1 Bearing Capacity Based On Standard Penetration Test (SPT) Method
The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was performed at 6 drilling points / bore holes, i.e. DHS-
GT01, DHS-GT02, DHS-GT03, DHS-GT04, DHS-GT05 and DHS-GT06. Luciano Decourt
recommended the Pile Bearing Capacity based on the depth of hard layers according to the
SPT value, of which represented by the value of N-SPT > 30.

𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄 = 𝛼𝛼(𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞 × 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴) + 𝛽𝛽(𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞 × 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴)

𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁
𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄 + 𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄 = [𝛼𝛼(𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 × 𝐾𝐾)𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴] + (𝛽𝛽[ + 1]𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴)
3
Where:
Qu = Pile Bearing Capacity (ton)
𝛼𝛼 = Bottom Pile Coefficient
𝛽𝛽 = Pile Skin Friction Coefficient
qp = Pile Point Bearing Capacity (ton)
qs = Pile Skin Friction Capacity/resistance (ton)
Ap = Pile Tip Area (m²)
As = Pile Shaft Surface Area (Circumference x depth of pile penetration) (m²)
Np = SPT bearing capacity factors value
Ns = Average Depth Factors Along the Pile within the ranged of 3<N<50
B = Foundation Diameter

The pile sizes used in the foundation bearing capacity analysis are pile with a diameter of
20cm, 25cm, 30cm, and square pile of 20cm x 20 cm , with the pile length assumed as the
penetration depth into of which according to the SPT value is the hard soil. This
recommendation analysis represents only as a general overview of pile foundation bearing
capacity. The detailed calculation and analysis would be performed by the building structure
planner. The summary of pile foundation calculation results are shown in Table 9 to Table
14.

9.1.2 Bearing Capacity Based On Cone Penetration Test (CPT) Method
The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) was performed at 6 points, i.e. DHS-GT01, DHS-GT02,
DHS-GT03, DHS-GT04, DHS-GT05 dan DHS- GT06. Van Der Ween recommended the Pile
Bearing Capacity based on the depth of hard layers according to the CPT value, of which
represented by the qc value of > 150 kg/cm².

𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞
𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄 = × 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴
3𝛼𝛼

where:
qc = Average Cone Tip Resistance value
𝛼𝛼 = Bearing Capacity Coefficient (depends on the type of the soil and
the pile)
3 = Qp factors safety number
1
𝑄𝑄𝑄𝑄 = 𝑃𝑃 × 𝐽𝐽𝐽𝐽𝐽𝐽
2
where:
P = Pile cimcumference
2 = Qp factors safety number

The pile sizes used in the foundation bearing capacity analysis are pile with a diameter of
20cm, 25cm, 30cm, and square pile of 20cm x 20 cm , with the pile length assumed as the
penetration depth into of which according to the CPT value is the hard soil. This
recommendation analysis represents only as a general overview of pile foundation bearing
capacity. The detailed calculation and analysis would be performed by the building structure
planner. The summary of pile foundation calculation results is shown in Table 15 sampai
Table 20.

9.1.3 Bearing Capacity Based On Meyerhof’s Method (Laboratory Method)
The Meyerhof’s Method is performed based on the laboratory testing results of several
physical and mechanical properties of soil which related to foundation bearing capacity
planning.

Where:
𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = Pile Tip Area
c = Soil Cohesion value
q = Effectie Vertical Stress of Soil
SF = Factor of Safety
Nc & Nq = Bearing Capacity Factors that include the necessary shape
and depth factors

The pile sizes used in the allowable foundation bearing capacity analysis are pile with a
diameter of 20cm, 25cm, 30cm, and square pile of 20cm x 20 cm. Table 21.

Based on the laboratory data analysis result regarding the allowable foundation bearing
capacity of pile, with the penetration depth of 4 – 15 meters, it is known that the allowable
load capacity for each pile ranged from 1 to 6 tons.

10 Limitation
Soil investigation usually performed under similar standards and competencies among the
geologists and geotechnical engineers.

The samples taken for testing and observation should be considered to represent only the
condition of from where the sample is taken. It should also be considered that soil/rock and
the geological state of core sample could be very different from the surface outcrop.

In many cases, the state of soil/rock at the time of intital investigation and interpretation is
different from the state during excavation and construction process. If such thing happened,
the changes should be evaluated by the geotechnical engineer and the construction design
should be adjusted or there should be an alternative design recommended.
