An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete
thought. An independent clause is a sentence.
Dependent Clause
A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a
complete thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence. Often a dependent clause is marked by
a dependent marker word.
ADJECTIVE CLAUSE
Essential clause:
(That Lucas takes is an essential adjective clause. It contains the
subject Lucas and the verb takes. The clause modifies the noun class,
providing necessary information about it.)
Nonessential clause:
(That I like the best is an adjective clause. It contains the subject I and the
verb like. The clause modifies the noun beach.)
