Reading Skills

A BRIEF LOOK AT THE MILESTONES OF READING

INFANT, TODDLER & PRE-K


Infants and toddlers experience shared gazed, demonstrate an

understanding of contact with facial expressions, attempt to turn pages

and hold books, and label items when looking at books with adults

Preschoolers know how to handle books, turn pages one at a time, can

identify their names and some letters in print, understand that print has

meaning, begins to play with sounds, syllables and rhymes., use 3-5

word sentences, and answer open-ended questions about books.

KINDERGARTGEN
Kindergartners can identify parts of a book, recognize high frequency

sight word and reads one syllable CVC words, can identify letters and

sounds, uses new vocabulary when speaking, and makes predictions

and ask questions about stories.

FIRST GRADE
First graders read CVC words, understand that words have correct

spelling and have meaning, blend sounds, play with phenomes to

make different words, decode words, know words have antonyms

and synonyms, can follow simple written directions and can share

what was learned from a book.

SECOND GRADE
Second graders read words with one or two syllables, uses phonics to

read larger words, read at a faster speed, decodes with context clues,

uses roots, suffixes and prefixes, and summarizes stories.

THIRD GRADE
Third graders read 114 word per minute, build their vocabulary by

reading daily, understand facts and opinions, explain cause and

effect, and ask questions about confusing text and/or words.
