Let’s Learn This

This module covers the lesson on Reading, Writing and


Comparing Integers. The exercises which you will walk through will
help you visualize integers in their correct order on a number line.
So, in this learning module, it is expected that you will be able
to:

 Compare integers
 Give the opposite integers

Number such as the positive and negative numbers and zero


are called INTEGERS. The ordering of integers can be shown on a
number line.

To the right of zero, we have the set of positive or natural
numbers. Sometimes we do not write the + sign for positive integers
anymore. It is understood that if a number has no sign, it is positive.

Example: +10 = 10, +18 = 18

To the left of zero, we have the set of negative integers. Notice


that the two sets starts from a common point which is zero. For this
reason, zero is called the point of origin.
In a set of notation, the set of integers maybe written as
follows:

I = {…-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…}

The dots at the beginning and at the end show that the
numbers continue endlessly in both directions.
We can see that every positive number has an opposite
negative number:

Example:
1. The opposite of +5 is -5.
2. The opposite of +3 is -3.
3. The opposite of 0 is 0
4. A gain of P25 can be written as +25.
5. a less of P25 can be written as -25.

Given any two integers, the smaller will always be to the left of
the larger on a number line.

Going up and down the elevator may represent positive and
negative numbers. When we go 8 floors up, that is +8 and when we
go 3 floors down, that is -3. Going down to the basement below the
first floor is -1.
We can say that moving to the right or going up indicate a
positive number, while moving to the left or going down indicates a
negative number.

Let’s Remember This

Positive and negative integers belong to the set of


numbers called INTEGERS. Natural numbers that we are
use everyday are positive numbers, so they are also
integers.
Zero (0), which is neither positive nor negative,
completes the set of integers on a number line any
number bigger than all the numbers to its left. The
numbers get smaller as you move to the left of the
number line.
