SPAN-TS 3005:2021

Foreword

This SPAN-TS was developed by the Working Group on Shower outlet for Water Efficient Product
Labelling Scheme (WEPLS).

This standard was developed with the following objectives:

a) to provide a comprehensive standard that prescribes requirements for shower outlets;

b) to provide a standard against which manufacturers of shower outlets can have their products
tested and certified; and

c) to provide regulatory bodies with a standard for monitoring of the products in the market.

In the preparation of this technical specification, reference was made to BS EN 1112, Sanitary
tapware - Shower outlets for sanitary tapware for water supply system of type 1 and type 2 - General
technical specification.

This standard will be subjected to review to reflect current needs and conditions. Users and other
interested parties may submit comments on the contents of this standard for consideration into
future versions.

Compliance with this standard does not by itself grant immunity from legal obligations.

Shower outlet for sanitary tapware for water supply system - Specification

1. Scope

This standard specifies requirements for the materials, design, performance, test methods,
marking and labelling for shower outlets.

This standard is applicable to shower outlet fixture fittings, inclusive of showerheads, rain
showers, and hand-held showers which may include fixed or pivot arm, flexible hose (with or
without flow controller), tap top assemblies or other components.

Compliance with this standard is a requirement for shower outlets to be labelled in accordance
with the provisions of the Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme (WEPLS).

This standard does not cover emergency deluge of safety showers.

2. Normative references

dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the
normative reference (including any amendments) applies.

SPAN-TS 3005:2021

3.2 shower head

A fitting used for ablutionary purposes, from which water issues as a film or spray.

3.3 fixed shower head

Fixed height outlet fitting through which water passes and is emitted as either a number of
separate jets or as water droplets.

3.4 swivel shower head

Fixed height outlet fitting through which water is emitted as either a number of separate jets or
water droplets, which incorporates a coupling that permits angular movement.

3.5 shower handset

Hand-held shower with an integral handle which, when used in conjunction with a flexible hose,
permits the user to direct the water trajectory as required.

3.6 spray plate

4. Material

4.1 Chemical and hygiene requirements

All materials coming into contact with water intended for human consumption shall present no
risk to health at temperatures up to the maximum working temperature. They shall not cause any
changes to drinking water in terms of quality, appearance, smell or taste.

The product, which is in permanent or in temporary contact with water intended for human
consumption, shall comply with MS 1583 for non-metallic products and AS/NZS 4020 for metallic
products, whichever applicable.

4.3 Body material

Body materials used shall be declared by manufacturer and verified that they are suitable for the
application.

5. Design and dimension

5.1 General

The design and construction of components without defined dimensions permits various design
solutions to be adopted by the manufacturer.

Permitted deviations from defined dimensions are specified in 5.4.

If applicable, the spray plate, where fitted, shall be removable in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions by the use of simple tools (e.g. screwdriver) for cleaning purposes at
least 50 times and still be replaceable without renewal of parts.

5.2 Shower outlet type

5.2.1 The shower outlet shall be one of the following types:

a) Shower head of the following variations:

‒ fixed shower head;

‒ swivel shower head;

b) Shower handset fed via a flexible hose and of one of the following variations:

‒ fixed height handset for use with a wall handset holder;

‒ variable height handset for use with a slide bar; and

‒ hand-held handset for use with a simple holder attached to a bath/shower mixer.

5.2.2 Where shower outlets are supplied together with other components (e.g. fixed or pivot
arm, a flexible hose with or without flow controller or mixing valve), which could affect the
performance of the shower outlet, such components shall be attached to the shower outlet for
testing. Where shower outlets are supplied together with components that would not affect their
performance (e.g. tap top assemblies, or other components), such as additional components need
not to be attached to the shower outlet for testing.

5.3 Connecting dimensions

The connecting dimensions of shower outlets are specified in Table 1 and Figures 1 to 5.
