Problem- A simply supported beam of span length 6m . The

Xumax/d=0.48
beam is carrying an imposed load of 15kN/m. Design the
Ru=3.45
beam with all necessary check. M20, Fe 415. Effective depth required, dreq= sqrt(122.3×10^6/(3.45×250))=376.63 mm
1. Dimensions of beam which is less than 465 mm depth provided
Hence size assumed is okay and can be designed as under reinforced
Assume depth D= span/12=6000/12=500mm; section.
effective depth, d= 500-cc—(1/2) bar dia=500-25-10=465 mm 3. Computation of reinforcement
Assume b=D/2= 500/2= 250 mm Mu=0.87fyAstd(1-(fy/fck)(Ast/bd))
2. Load calculation Ast= 833 m^2
Self weight of the beam= b×D×γconcrete Astreq= 833 mm2 > Ast min hence ok
⇒ 0.25×0.5×25=3.125kN/m (unit weight of concrete=25kN/m^3) Now compute the no. of bars
⇒ DL=3.125 kN/m Lets 20 mm dia bars are provided Then no. of bars= 833/314=2.65
⇒ LL=15kN/m Provide- 3#20 mm dia bars
⇒ Total= 15+3.125=18.125kN/m= W Ast provided= 3(314)= 942 mm^2
⇒ Factored load= Wu= 1.5xW= 1.5×18.125kN/m=27.2 kN/m
⇒ Factored moment= Mu= Wul^2/8= 27.2×6^2/8=122.3kN-m
Pt provided= Ast*100/bd= (942*100)/(250*465)= 0.81%
4. Calculation os shear reinforcement

Shear force, Vu= Wul/2= 27.2×6/2= 81.6 kN

Shear strength of the concrete for M25 from Table 20

pt Tc
0.75 0.56
1 0.62 CORRECT- 0.64
0.81 ((0.62-0.56)/(1-0.75))*(0.81-0.75)+0.56=0.574 N/mm^2

Nominal shear stress, Tv= Vu/bd= 81.6*10^3/(250*465)=0.702 N/mm2

Allowable shear stress, Tc max= 2.8 N/mm2 Tv < Tc max Hence section is okay
(Tv=0.702) > (Tc=0.574), so stirrups are required
Permissible shear stress Tc from Table 19 Shear force carried by the concrete= Tc permissible*b*d= 0.574*250*465
6672N= 66.72 kN
So shear force carried by stirrups, Vus= 81.6-66.72=14.87kN
2#12mm dia

2L-V-8mm dia

Vus= 0.87* 415*Asv*465/Sv

3#20mm bars
Assume – 2L- 8 mm diameter vertical stirrup, then Asv= 2*3.14*8^2/4= 100.53mm2
Sv= 0.87*415*100*465/(67.89*1000)=247.29 mm < minimum(300 mm, 0.75*465=348.75)
Provide- 2L-V-stirrup -8 mm dia @200 mm
