Title of Workshops : - The Grammar of Photography - Mentoring and Coaching

Purpose:
Whether you’re just starting out or you’re well established as a professional but think you need fresh
vision , my mentoring, support service is at hand to help evolve your work to the next level by
having your work curated and together finding a way forward visually.

Working Together you will :

Develop deep awareness of self and of the environment and cultivate the habit of direct observation
and thoughtful reflection.

Pay attention to enable deep seeing and visualization

How to identify the subject, organize space and use underlying geometric structure to shape the
viewer's experience of looking at an image
Be able use photography as a means of storytelling
Edit well
Develop exciting photography projects

Classroom and Practicals

Improving compositional skills is one of the most useful things a photographer can do to take better
pictures.

The Grammar of Photography will cover 40 elements over 10 weeks.

Class structure

Period: Serial workshops. 10 Workshop modules.


Length: To be effective. Minimum 4 hours per workshop module.

We shall be exploring visual literacy for photographers in depth with the 1st part of every module
and class starts with a briefing on 4 new elements per week

The second half of the class will be an hour long use of the camera and practicals.

The third half will be the assessment of the attendees work

Modules 1 to 10
Sessions are in the following format

Briefing.
PRACTICAL Excercises of the 4 elements Review of images post excercises.
Critique and Curation.
Minimum one to one
Participants: Maximum 5

Style : Practical critical engagement with interactive problem solving shooting excercises

Language: English.
CONCEPT

The workshop is designed to transform our way of understanding photography, or interpreting or


viewing an image.

RESULT :

As a consequence of these workshops there will be a transformed internal view of Photography, This
transformation will be sudden and change how we ‘think’ about photography and the making of an
image.

The curriculum and sequence of sessions are designed to allow us insight about ourselves and offer
us ways and tools to master the art of seeing and visualisation of the final image before we release
the shutter.

SUMMARY
How to embrace who you are and the processes of chance or purposeful and mindful
photography.

Photography is the most diverse and democratic of the visual arts. Photographers often experiment
with creativity to stand out from the crowd by disrupting expectations. Image making has multiple
functions, contexts and meaning within and beyond the art world. It also has many categories , some
of which are inherited from paintings - still life, portraiture, landscape , street life. The photographer
who takes a photograph merely by eye, without any reason, is like a mirror which copies everything
placed in front of it without being aware of its meaning.

We shall also understand how and why photographs consist of formal and visual elements and have
their own ‘grammar’. These formal and visual elements (such as line, shape, repetition, rhythm,
balance etc.) are shared with other works of art and yet photographs also have a specific language
that give structure to a photographer’s perceptions of the world.

The workshop will address photographs as lockers of memory reminding us of people and things
that have been. Photographs record what has been lost, what no longer exists, or what still exists
but will be lost at some point in the future.

We shall learn how to read a photograph beyond technical quality and discover its hidden meaning
because the meaning of images are never fixed, are not contained solely within the photographs
themselves but rely on a combination of the viewer's sensitivity, knowledge and understanding and
the specific context in which the image is seen.

We shall understand that Seeing is dependent on our feelings - past experiences - visual knowledge
-attention and the workshops will highlight to us that to truly “See” – we have to increase what
comes to mind when you look at what is in front of you :

Kevin has been making images with a camera for nearly 50 years since he was 8 years old.
He has exhibited in Europe. He also works with art residency programmes and is member of panel
for several photographic forums and has had his work featured in several magazines. His paid
commissions include fine art corporate and fashion.
