Acknowledgments

The authors would like to thank the following individuals for their contributions:
Dr. Chrysoula Litina for her work on the copyright permissions for chapter 6
(carbonated magnesia cements) and chapter 9 (magnesia in self-healing cement and
concrete) and also Dr. Antonis Kanellopoulos and Dr. Rami Alghamri for their con-
tribution to the content of chapter 9 (magnesia in self-healing cement and concrete).
We would also like to thank Dr. Jihui Qin and Dr. Chao You for their contributions
to chapter 4 (MPC). The authors gratefully acknowledge the support from the UK
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the National Nat-
ural Science Foundation of China through research grants for aspects of the work
presented in chapter 0 (characterization of magnesia), chapter 4 (magnesium phos-
phate cement), chapter 6 (carbonated magnesia cements), chapter 7 (magnesia in
alkali activated cements), chapter 8 (magnesia as expansive additive) and chapter 9
(magnesia in self-healing cement and concrete). The relevant EPSRC research grants
were: Waste minimization through sustainable magnesium oxide cement products
(GR/T26870/1), MagMats: Magnesia-bearing construction materials for future energy
infrastructure (EP/M003159/1), Materials for Life (M4L): Biomimetic multi-scale
damage immunity for construction materials (EP/K026631/1) and Resilient Materi-
als for Life (RM4L) (EP/P02081X/1). The relevant NSFC grants were: MgO-bearing
construction materials for future energy infrastructure (51461135003) and Forma-
tion mechanism and adjustment of the microstructure of Mg/Ca carbonate binder
(51502134). Project MagMats in particular was instrumental in bringing together the
UK and China co-authors of this book. The authors also acknowledge the support
from the UK Technology Strategy Board for the support through project SMiRT (Soil
Mix Remediation Technology) related to some of the work in chapter 7 (Magnesia in
alkali activated cements).
We would also like to give a special thank you to Elsevier for their patience and
invaluable assistance.
