Research Presentation Project Guidelines, summer 2021

Online Art Appreciation

Worth 200 points!
Your research presentation project must be uploaded properly in Blackboard by
11:59 pm, June 29 and it should show that you did thorough research!
It is recommended that you do not wait until the last minute to do this
assignment – it can be submitted early!
If Mrs. Pennington has problems opening your submission, she will contact you through
Blackboard course messages after the assignment’s due date.
Check course messages often!

Instructions:
Choose a work of art to research.
The work of art must be mentioned or shown in your textbook.
Make sure when choosing your work of art that you can find enough information about it to
follow these guidelines:
Be sure to include your name, the name of the artwork, the artist’s name, and the date the
work of art was made. Also, include the page number in your textbook where the work of art is
shown or mentioned.
If possible, include a photo of the work of art.
Explain why you selected this piece of art.
Thoroughly describe the materials the artist used to make the art. If it’s a painting, what
kind of paint was used? What is it painted on? If it’s a sculpture, what did the artist make the
sculpture from? If it’s a print, what kind of printing process was used? If it’s a drawing, what did
the artist use to make the drawing and what did they draw on?
Thoroughly describe the process the artist used to make the art. If the artist used fresco
paint, tell what it’s like to paint with fresco. If the artist made a sculpture from marble, what kind
of tools did they use to carve it? If the artist used serigraphy, explain how a serigraph print is
made.
Describe the subject of the work of art. What do you see? Does it represent something? What
aspects are emphasized?
Describe the context of the work of art. Was the artist paid to make the art? Were there other
artists making similar things at the time this work of art was made? Was there anything
significant that happened to affect the artist’s work?
Describe the content of the work of art. What does the work of art tell us about the culture the
art came from? Is the artist making a statement or communicating a message through this work
of art?
Describe the style of this art or time period of the work of art.
Describe the work of art including what it looks like, what it feels like, and how big it is.
Does the work of art emphasize specific elements of art or principles of design?
Describe the story behind the work of art, including why the artist chose to make it. Did the
artist make other works of art similar to this one, or was this one unique?
Include a list of the sources you used when researching the work of art you chose. You
must use the information in your textbook about the work of art you chose, plus at least two
additional reliable/scholarly sources.
Once your research is completed, you may choose to submit it in the form of a research paper
(following MLA formatting rules, three pages minimum) using Word, or as a PowerPoint
presentation (12 slides minimum). If using Google Slides or Google Docs instead of
PowerPoint, your presentation must be downloaded to your computer and converted to a
.pdf file before uploading into Blackboard. Do not submit using any other file format.
To submit this assignment, open the Research Project assignment folder found in Module Three
and upload your file as an attachment. If you have problems doing this, contact Mrs.
Pennington immediately through Course Messages or at lisa.pennington@uaht.edu. Check
Course Messages often immediately after the due date, because Mrs. Pennington will try to
contact you if she has issues opening your file if it’s submitted before the due date.

Alternate art-making assignment with paper – You can choose to do this assignment instead of research
presentation project

Create a work of art using whatever media you’d like, but the art has to be original - something you
made entirely on your own within the past three months

The work of art must make a statement

The work of art must have a strong message or content

The work of art must show relevance to things happening in your environment (local or national)
today

In addition to making the work of art, you must also write a short paper (two pages, 12 pt. type, double-
spaced, MLA format) explaining your source of inspiration, what the content of your art piece is, and
what you used to make your art from (the media). If you create graphic art, you must include mention of
what software you used.

Upload a photo of your art and the written statement about your art to the research project folder in
Blackboard by the deadline of 11:59 pm on June 29. This assignment is also worth 200 points.
