Locating Education in the Socio- economic Context of Badarpur Khadar, Delhi, India

ABSTRACT
The paper explores various dimensions of Badarpur Khadar community, which is a Muslim dominated village with
special focus on its socio- economic status. It highlights the role of education amidst the current status of educational
facilities in the community and how they are impacting the residents. The paper discusses various interventions
undertaken by the social work trainee for enhancing learning capacity of children through non formal classes and also
in the area of school admissions, career guidance and by working closely with school authorities to facilitate the latter
to come out with better options for school activities. The trainee has aimed to impart a comprehensive view to the
paper by highlighting the status of Muslims in India by including the findings of Sachar Committee Report which
highlights data that point towards social exclusion of Muslims in India. The paper also discusses capability approach,
theoretical perspective, education as a means of empowerment and school dropout in India. The paper strives to
present a holistic approach by also throwing light upon the status of education in India and the inclusion of education
as a Sustainable Development Goal.
