Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and test. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the computer peripheral devices. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. The order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the computer peripheral devices; and

2. find and label computer peripheral devices.

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you tackled the parts and types of the
computer system unit. There are other computer devices that you can
connect to your computer via wires or wireless to provide services. Examples
would be speakers, which produce sound if you play music, and the monitor
to display images as well as to watch movies.

Before you proceed to the next lesson, let us review first the previous
lesson that you have studied.

1. What are the different parts of a computer system?

2. What are the types of computer system?
What’s New

Directions: Label the different computer peripheral devices. Write your

answers on a separate sheet of paper.

What Is It

What is a Computer Peripheral Device?

A peripheral device is any component that you connect to your

computer via wires or wireless to provide additional alternative input or
output. Examples of devices include keyboards, pointing devices, touchpads,
biometric devices, smart card readers, barcode scanners, touch screens,
KVM switches, game controllers and joysticks, digitizers, multimedia
devices, digital cameras, webcams, speakers, microphones, and others.
The following are the different computer peripheral devices:

1. Biometric Devices
Biometrics is a device used to scan and
determine the unique aspects of various body
parts of a person such as fingerprint, iris, and
others. The information gathered by the
device from the person is used as a key to
prevent unauthorized access to a particular
machine like laptop.

2. Barcode Reader
A barcode reader is a specialized
input tool widely used for inventory
management in retail and other
industrial sectors. Lasers or LEDs can
be used as light sources by barcode
readers and can scan one or two-
dimensional barcodes. The device mostly uses a USB connection,
while modern barcode devices use a Wi-Fi connection.

3. Digitizers
They are one of the technologies used
by visual artists to render arts and
images in the digital world. This
powerful device can do painting,
sketching, cartooning, animation, and
other related activities. The device
receives input from the sensitive flat
surface that recognizes any activities
done on it. If an artist presses against
the surface, the output will be shown
directly on the screen. Most of today’s
digitizer devices use a USB or wireless technology to connect to the
computer. There are also updated digitizers that you can draw directly
on the surface of the device screen.

4. Digital Camera and Webcams

Digital cameras are handy and portable devices
that are usually used to capture images
and record videos of everything. The
webcam on the other hand is a
computer-connected camera. The
webcam can be connected via I / O port
of the computer system via USB or Wi-Fi and
has no self-contained mechanism for
recording. The purpose is to directly transfer
the captured image or video to the computer. Webcams with wired
and wireless NIC interfaces are prevalent for direct network
connection.

5. External Drive
An HDD drive with its own power is mounted
outside the PC system enclosure and
connected to the PC through
the USB port, while the USB
flash drive is a storage device also
connected via the USB port.

6. Gamepads and Joysticks

They are the two common controllers used in the
game world to control the games on the PC. These
game controllers have buttons and triggers
manipulated by users to change the movements on the display
monitor. The common connectors of these devices nowadays are by
USB and Wi-Fi connection, where most of it is plug and play.
However, some operating systems require you to install the driver to
operate.

7. Keyboards
It is one of the common primary input
devices of a PC. The use of this device is for
you to input data like characters, numbers,
and special characters. Most of the modern
keyboards use USB and Wi-Fi connections.
Moreover, the device is plug and play, so there’s no
need for a software driver to install.

8. KVM Switches
Keyboard, video, and mouse known
as (KVM) switch is a device that
controls multiple computers using only
a single keyboard, mouse, and
monitor. The device is designed for
multiple servers installed in a rack mount which is easy to administer
by the user. Modern KVM switches usually use USB and HDMI
connections while others are still using the combination of USB and
VGA connections.

9. Mouse
Another input device of a PC which is hand-fitting and
uses motion-detection by using optic to decode its own
physical two-dimensional movement into the screen cursor. Most
optical mouse use USB or Wi-Fi connection.

10. Microphone
A microphone is an electronic device that
translates sound vibrations into electronic signals, which
it sends to a recording device like your computer or
amplifier.

11. Printer
A printer is a computer output device that prints
text or images on paper. You can usually see this in
an office.

12. Projector
A projector is an output device that may take
pictures generated by a laptop,
desktop computer, smartphone, and other
related devices to reproduce and enlarge
them by projection into a screen, wall, or
another surface.

13. Scanner
A scanner operates like a photocopier which
converts text and images into digital images
instead of paper reproduction.

14. Speakers
These are output devices of computers that convert
the electrical signal into an audible
signal. Users usually integrate this
device into their computer system set
for them to use in listening to music.

15. Smart Card Readers

A smart card reader is a small device that
can attach to a laptop computer or desktop.
Some are also attached to the panel wall next to
the door to secure it, such as in hotels. The
device scans the chip embedded in the card (like
ID) to compare its data to the one saved in the database. If the
scanned data do not match, then the door will not open.

16. Touchscreens
A visual display unit that is sensitive to the bit of a finger or a
stylus. Nowadays it is employed in
laptops, ATM machines, retail location
terminals, automobile navigation, and
industrial controls. The bit of the screen became widely in style for
smartphones and tablets.
