Understanding the Gulf Mark (G Mark)

Information for exporters

Introduction
All manufacturers placing low-voltage electrical products or appliances on the market in
the Gulf states must affix the Gulf Mark (G Mark) to their products. BSI can work with you
to ensure your products are compliant and meet these requirements.
This document provides an overview of the requirements for the G Mark. We show how
BSI experts can work with you throughout the conformity process.

What is the G Mark?

Similar to the EU CE marking certification, the G Mark or Gulf Conformity Mark is a certification
designed to ensure the quality and safety of products placed on to a common market, in this case,
the member states that form the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). The mark was introduced in
2009 by the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO), the body that harmonizes the rules and
protects the public, the environment and the economy in GCC countries.

It’s a mandatory, legal requirement for low-voltage electrical equipment and appliances in:

Saudi Arabia Bahrain Kuwait

Oman Qatar UAE
Products that don’t comply with the G Marking rules will be refused entry into the Gulf Common
Market or withdrawn from sale in these countries.

Why do I need a Notified Body for G Mark certification?
Since 1 July 2016, certain mains-operated electrical products require certification by a third part or Notified Body
approved by the GSO such as BSI. Previously some of these products could be self-certified but this is not longer
the case.
The list below shows the products which require the services of a Notified Body such as BSI in order to achieve
G Mark certification.

• electric fans • hair-dressing apparatus/hand • electric irons

dryers
• refrigerators/freezers • air conditioners
• electric heating apparatus
• clothes washers/dryers • plugs and sockets
• microwave ovens
• food grinders/mixers/juice
extractors • cookers/grills/ovens
• toasters • water heaters
