It's usually men who wear this kind of

outfit in Kosovo, there are hardly any female
beekeeper's in the country. Shqipe Shala is one
of them. The beekeeping season might be over,
but she still checks on her charges regularly. An
electric fence protects her hives from the
bears that still roam this area near Prizren,
Kosovo's second largest city. The Sharr
Mountains National Park just to the south is a
refuge for Balkan lynx, this species of wild cat
is critically endangered. There are only a few
dozen of them left. Shqipe Shala has 150
beehives. She's the boss and her husband
works for her. That's quite an unusual setup,
but it works for them. " We like to do things
systematically. I start from one end, my
husband starts from the other. We like to
compete. It's kind of a game to see who can
check more beehives."

Today it looks like a tie. Once the inspections
are done, Shala takes care to extinguish the coal in
her smoker, which is used to calm the bees. A
forest fire could have disastrous consequences.
Then she reveals a little trade secret. " This is our
beeswax harvest from this autumn. We use it to
create new hives. It's a lot of work, but this is the
most natural option for the bees instead of using
mass-produced industrial wax. Unfortunately, the
government doesn't provide any funding for the
extra effort involved, but it's the only way to treat
our bees well." And it's worth the effort. She
doesn't have any trouble finding buyers for her
organic honey. It sells for twice the price of the
honey
sold at streetside markets. Beekeeping, sheep
breeding, and cheesemaking are an important part
of the economy in Kosovo, the youngest and
smallest nation in the Balkans. Shala went abroad
to study organic farming methods. Nowadays,
environmental activists come to see her to learn
how she applies organic methods to beekeeping.
The aim is to raise awareness across Kosovo of eco-
friendly farming practices.

MOTHER NATURE 08
" I attended a workshop in Germany. I learned a lot
about animal welfare, which nobody here knows
anything about. I'm now giving courses to pass on this
knowledge. I hope people will come to realize we have
to protect nature and that includes bees. They are so
important for the environment." Nature conservation
can be an uphill battle. The director of the Sharr
Mountains National Park has been sounding the alarm.
He says there are just eight rangers patrolling the
park's 500 square kilometers. He also says that they
need at least three times as many rangers.
"Environmentalists could help us by bringing our staff
shortage to the attention of the government. But there
are also other problems to address, such as illegal
logging and garbage. And also the construction of
hydroelectric power plants." "We have to pay more
attention to our natural environment, especially in the
national park. This also affects my business. If forest
clearance and everything that goes along with it is
allowed to go on, I will eventually lose my bees." Kosovo
gained independence in 2008. It's only natural, she
says, that it will take a while for such a young country
to sort things out. Shqipe Shala, for one, remains
optimistic.

1,What is the major topic of the
recording?

The video mainly talks about the beekeeping

job,and the detrusction of forest In the video,
the narrator has focus on the precaution, methods
that Shqipe Shala-the beekeeper- use to raise the
bees in the most natural way and keep her hives
safe from outside elements. Through eco-friendly
farming, she is raising awareness across Kosovo
on why protecting nature is neccesary. After that,
the video address a lot of problems such as staff
shortage, illegal logging,garbage and the
contrustion of hydroelectric power plants. The
narrator has emphasized on pollution and
deforestation. It is clear that the people need to
pay more attetion to the environment and this
should not be taken lightly as It affects the life of
many people,animals.

All of the speaker’s attitude towards the

destruction of forest is concern, worry but at the
same time hopeful and optimistic The concern and
worry are clearly shown in the tone of the speaker,
in the way that they address problems and negative
effects from the detrusction of forest.Through this
line and her expression, you can see her uneasiness
“If forest clearance and everything that goes along
with it is allowed to go on, I will eventually lose my
bees.” The fear of losing everything is real and It is
making them worry so much more But at the same
time, the speaker still remain hopeful. The beekeeper
is trying to raise awareness across Kosovo of eco-
friendly farming pratices. She attended a workshop
in Germany and now giving courses to pass this
knowledge on “ I hope people will come to realize
we have to protect nature and that includes bees” .
Through environmentalists, the director hope that
they can help “by bringing our staff shortage to the
attention of the government”. The beekeeper says It
is natural for a young country to sort things out,
because of that she still “remains optimistic”

3)What is the attitude of

the speaker to the issue
mentioned?

4, How does the
information relate
to your background
knowledge?
Ever since I was a child, I was always interested in
nature. I spent my free time reading books about nature
or surfing the internet about It. Because of that, I have
also researched into our problems that we are facing now.
Illegal logging, garbage, etc. are real problems that is
happening everyday .And this video reminded me of that
once again.
Second, I’m actually quite shocked to hear that the
construction of hydroelectric power plants is also harmful
to our nature. I always thought that the more green power
that we could make, the better our environment will be
but It seems that I was wrong. I never considered the fact
that we need to clear more lands, forests to build It and
doing that will do more harm than good. That bit of
information really blew my mind.
Finally, I can clearly see and feel the negative effects of
pollution, poor environment. After I've known about how
people are trying so much to protect our planet, I think I
should have some actions right away for my own benefit
and also for the community.

6)Which skills have been improved

I have learned and improved a lot of things

through this listening project, and my English skills in
general have improved considerably.
The most noticeable change is in my listening skill.
At first, I couldn’t hear the accents so well because I
haven’t trained my listening skill very often.
However, since I worked on finding sources and
checking them, I can now listen to almost every
accent without much difficulty.
Second, my writing skill has also improved. For
this project, I have looked into a lot of ways to
improve my writing skill to make my work the best It
could be. Because of that, I had a chance to practice
my wording, how to organize ideas to make the
writing more clarity and expressive.
Third, I can see a improvement in my critical
thinking skill, especially note-taking skill. I’ve
learned how to sort out the key word, how to
organize my note so that it can be more logical. The
way I present the note – taking now really help me to
understand the idea and it’s easier to find out the
topic.
Finally, I have improved my computer skills,
especially with Microsoft Word and design skill
through PowerPoint and website such as Canva and
Crello. I can now say with confident that I know how
to work with computer better than ever.

Self
Reflection
During the time I was working on this project, I have faced a lot of problems.
The first thing I have to do is looking for a good listening source. I don’t know
which topic should I start with, so I couldn’t pay so much time to find the
sources.
Then, when I finally decided to take up “nature”, another problem just
came up. Not until when I have made up my mind about the topic did I realize
that it was very hard to find listening source without any subtitle or transcript
and translation. Many big website like Youtbe, BBC, CNN, … are only provide
subtitled or auto – subs videos so those I couldn’t use them. It would be a
nightmare to me – I had to search on the Internet for almost every night until
I found an amazing website named DW, which was created to post news from
Germany. There are a thousand of sources on this site and the best thing –
they are all no subtitle. It took me about a month considering which one could
be the most gripping, a quite long time but I think my source worth for it.
After I have finished on the finding part, I started to listen and do research
about my listening source. But once again, I figured out that there are so
many things have to be done. It wasn’t so hard for me to hear what people
were talking about, but the only thing that trouble me most was the main
things that speakers want to deliver. I think the reason why I couldn’t catch
up with the idea was because I didn’t have much knowledge about the topic,
so I find it was pretty hard to understand the idea. However, by using the
internet, I have overcome this problem and I could work on my project easier.
Another problem I have faced up with is about the design step. Although
I’ve tried my best editing and fixing the portfolio, I think I’m not a artist and
there is a limit in my art skill. After all, I’m quite impress with my product
because I haven’t done such a high demanding project.
I’ve learn a lot from this project, especially about how I should plan my
work logically so that I can stick to it and try to make it the best. Honestly, I’m
not a hard- working guy so doing those stuff is a little bit tired. But even when
I’m so exhausted, I didn’t feel so bad and this somehow very fun. I recommend
you to keep yourself a positive attitude, don’t get panic and things will be just
MOTHER NATURE
fine.
