Cia Mao is packing her bags and heading off to South Africa, where she will spend next
year. She is setting off on her 72nd birthday. It will be the first time she has set foot on
foreign soil since her twenties, when she flew to Japan from her native China. Never
before had she ventured further than the Chinese city of Beijing, which she visited at
