Lesson 4: Surface Area of Solid Figures

Objectives:
a. To solve for surface area of solid figures.
b. Understand derivation of formulas.
c. To solve problems with surface area of solid figures.

Surface Area of Solid Figure

Surface area is also the faces of the solid figure. In order to solve for the surface
area of a solid figure, find first all the area of plane figures involve. Then combine them all
together. Formulas for finding the area of plane figure is derive to form formulas for solid
figures.
Formulas:
Surface Area of cube: S = 6 e2
Surface Area of rectangular Prism: S = 2lw + 2wh + 2lw
Surface Area of Pyramid : S = Abase + A faces ;
Abase = area of plane figure

A faces = number of face x area of 1 triangle

Surface Area of a Cylinder: S = 2 πrh+2 π r 2

Surface Area of a Cone: S = π r 2+ π rl

Surface Area of Sphere: S = 4 π r2

Example:
1.) Find the surface area of the cube.

S = 6 e2

S = 6 ( 5 )2

S = 6 x 25
5cm S = 150 cm2

2.) Find the surface area of the rectangular prism.

3cm
S = 2lw + 2wh + 2lw
3cm S = 2 (8 x 3) + 2 (3 x 3 ) + 2 (8 x 3)
8cm S = 2 (24) + 2 (9) + 2 (24)
S = 48 + 18 + 48 ; S = 114
3.) Find the surface area of square pyramid.

A faces = 4 face x 3 cm2 S = Abase + A faces

A faces = 12 cm 2 S = 4 + 12

S = 16 cm 2

4.) Find the surface area of cylinder.

S = 2 πrh+2 π r 2

S = 2(3.14)(2)(7)+2(3.14)(2)2
7 cm
S = (6.28) (14) + (6.28) (4)
S = 87.92 + 25.12
2 cm
S = 113.04 cm 2

5.) Find the surface area of cone.

S = π r 2+ πrl
S = ( 3.14 )(6)2+ ( 3.14 ) ( 6 ) (8)
cm S = (3.14) (36) + (3.14) (48)
S = 113.04 + 150.72
cm
S = 263.76 cm 2

6.) Find the surface area of sphere.

S = 4 π r2
S = 4 ( 3.14 )(5)2
S = 12.56 x 25
5cm S = 314 cm 2
