Stump the Class

In this activity, students write their own equations using the rules you taught them. Have each
student take turns posting an equation on the board. The other students must identify which
exponent rule, or rules, have been used to get the final answer. The student who answers correctly
can be the next to post the equation.
Equations can be more complex the higher the grade level. For instance, a high school class must
have four or more terms or rules used in the equation. Each student can try to stump the class.

Neighbor Challenge
This is a pass and solve activity. Each student lays a clean sheet of paper on his or her desk. Next,
randomly choose an exponent rule and a number each must use to write a problem to solve. Give a
time limit to write, and then each student passes their paper to a neighbor, who must solve it.
Pose another random number and rule for round two. Now each student must use the previous
answer to create a new equation. Continue passing and solving for as many rounds as suits your
class.
