DESIGN PROBLEM:

HOME OF THE ELDERLY CITIZENS

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:


The character of the problem will call extensive study on the part of both public and private
homes to caring for persons who are, on the average, older and more feeble in body or health and
more disabled than had been the case. These persons in their needs for dare being distinct from
those who must have it in general hospitals or in hospitals for the chronically sick. Also while
homes remain essential, they can have no satisfactory place in the whole range of social services
unless they are motivated by and operated with the enlightenment of our twentieth century
philosophy about the people and their future state of welfare.

DESIGN CRITERIA:
Architects working on buildings of this general category will be called upon to absorb new
methods of scientific treatment and care of older people, design and plan new types of buildings
to suit the programs. In this respect, the following would suffice, namely:
1. The building should be planned with facilities for health and activity as well as
retirement.
2. Ambulant elderly people Should have the feeling as like in their own house/ home.
3. Extension services would make homecare feasible.
4. The nursing home should be medically-oriented quarters and housing for staff should
be accessibly near.
5. Rehabilitation facilities for chronically sick are also necessary.
6. Recreational facilities are also required and necessary.
7. A medical center, both for operational and chronic have vital roles in the care of the
aged.
8. Gardening id an occupation that can be carried on at all homes. Opportunities for
handicraft should be met by the provision of workshop facilities.
9. Reading centers and receiving areas for visiting families.
10. For both companionship and easier nursing care, the aged should be grouped in small
units of four per apartment.
