1. SCOPE
1.1 Purpose: This specification provides requirements for cleaning titanium and titanium-base
alloys.
1.2 Applicability: This specification is applicable for cleaning titanium parts.
1.3 Definitions
1.3.1 Honeywell, as used in this specification, refers to Honeywell Aerospace.
1.3.2 Water-break-free condition. Attained when the surface of a part is rinsed with water and a
film of water remains on the part and does not form droplets for a minimum of 10 seconds.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
2.1 Non-Government Documents: The following documents form a part of this specification to the
extent specified herein. Unless otherwise indicated, the issue in effect on date of invitation for bids
or request for proposal shall apply.
2.1.1 Honeywell Specifications and Forms
C5102 - Cleaning, Degreasing, Solvent, Semiaqueous and Aqueous
AF0319 - Honeywell Aerospace Request for MESA (Materials Engineering Supplier Agreement)
2.1.2 ASTM International Standards
E 1447 - Standard Test Method for Determination of Hydrogen in Titanium and Titanium Alloys by
Inert Gas Fusion Thermal Conductivity/Infrared Detection Method
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Preparation
3.1.1 A documented work instruction shall be prepared outlining the necessary steps to clean to
the requirements of this specification and shall include, as a minimum, the following information.
a. step-by-step processing instructions
b. time in solution (Method 2)
c. solution make-up and control (Method 2)
d. temperature of solution (Method 2)
3.1.1.1 A copy of this work instruction shall be kept on file by the cleaning source and shall be
made available for review by Honeywell personnel upon request.

3.2 Procedure
3.2.1 General Practices Applicable to All Methods
3.2.1.1 Titanium parts shall not be permitted to contact methanol or chlorinated solvents, such as
trichloroethylene or 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
3.2.2 Method 1 (General Cleaning)
3.2.2.1 Degrease in accordance with C5102, or degrease in solvent, such as stoddard solvent,
acetone, or isopropyl alcohol.
3.2.2.2 Additional cleaning in an alkaline cleaner, which is not detrimental to titanium, is permitted.
3.2.3 Method 2 (Light Oxide Removal) - To remove less than 0.0002 inch contamination such as
light oxide layer formed during heat treatment.
3.2.3.1 Clean in accordance with Method 1.
3.2.3.2 Etch in a nitric-hydrofluoric acid solution.
• Recommended etching solution: 3 v/v% hydrofluoric acid (70% w/w) [(or 4.5% v/v hydrofluoric
acid (49% w/w)] (or 37 g/l ammonium bifluoride), 30 v/v% nitric acid (42° Be), room temperature.
• Remove parts after the shortest possible time necessary for complete contaminant removal in
order to prevent excessive attack (typically 10-20 seconds).
3.2.3.3 Rinse. (Optional: Re-alkaline clean and rinse.)
3.2.3.4 Blow dry with clean, oil-free air or oven dry at 160° to 275°F.
3.2.3.5 When cleaning parts with configurations which may entrap acid, check for complete acid
removal in accordance with the following.
• Test the wet parts for complete acid removal by placing blue litmus paper in an area where
entrapment may occur. A red color indicates the presence of acid and the need for an additional
rinsing or re-alkaline cleaning and rinsing. Acid may be considered to be removed when no
change in color is evident.
3.2.4 Method 3 (Oxide Removal) - For removal of oxide layers which form on titanium when heated
in air.
3.2.4.1 Grit blast using 100-grit or finer silica, alumina, or zirconia grit to remove all scale and
break down the oxide layer.
3.2.4.2 Clean in accordance with Method 2.
3.2.4.3 Alternative to grit blasting, solutions outside the concentration range specified for Method 2
may be used provided periodic testing for hydrogen pickup and intergranular attack are performed.
3.2.5 Method 4 (Heavy Scale Removal) - Use Method 3.

3.4.3 Samples tested in accordance with 3.3.1.2 shall exhibit no intergranular attack and no
greater than 25 ppm hydrogen pickup.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1 Responsibility for Inspection: The supplier shall be responsible for performing all required
tests. Results of such tests shall be reported to Honeywell as required by Section 6. Honeywell
reserves the right to sample and to perform any confirmatory testing deemed necessary to ensure
processing conforms to the requirements of this specification.
4.2 Classification of Tests
4.2.1 Tests for compliance with 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 are classified as acceptance tests.
4.2.2 Tests for compliance with 3.4.3 are periodic tests and shall be performed quarterly when
solution concentrations outside the range of 3.3.1.1 are used.
4.3 Sampling
4.3.1 All parts shall be visually inspected for compliance with 3.4.1.
4.3.2 Parts with questionable surface cleanliness shall be tested for a water-break-free surface
condition.
4.4 Retesting: Inspected parts with residual contamination shall be processed through an addi-
tional cleaning cycle and reinspected for compliance.
4.5 Rejection: Parts not in compliance with this specification shall be rejected.
5. APPROVAL AND PROCUREMENT
5.1 Methods 2, 3, and 4 of this specification are controlled processes. Authorization to fulfill the
requirements of this specification is limited to suppliers who have been approved by Honeywell
specifically for this specification.
5.2 Alternate testing or processing methods may be submitted to Honeywell for approval. A for-
mally approved Materials Engineering Supplier Agreement (MESA) is required prior to implementa-
tion of alternate methods.
5.2.1 Requests for a MESA shall be submitted on Form AF0319.
