 Encephalitis deaths in Bihar – Link to Lychees
 More than 100 children have died in Bihar in the past few weeks with Acute
Encephalitis Syndrome (AES)
 What is causing these deaths?
In a case of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), there is no bacteria or
virus involved.
When people – particularly children, who have considerably lower levels
of body fat than adults – sleep without eating dinner, their body depends
on reserves of glycogen stored in liver.
When glycogen reserves are depleted in the liver, the body draws energy
from less-ideal sources like muscle and connective tissue.
the liver – produces many products like ketones and amino acids which
can have damaging effects on the brain or peripheral nervous system
An enzyme called 'MCPG' in litchis can trigger a stark overnight dip in
sugar levels (a condition called hypoglycaemia)
With abundant availability of lichies during this season, when
undernourished and hungry children ate lichies, it spiked their amino acid
levels thereby causing fever, convulsions, coma and death.
