TITLE: Extempore

SIGNIFICANCE:

 Extempore enables the student to think out of the box and off the feet.

 It is a great platform to develop communication skills and time

management.

 Pushes one to conceive and generate ideas without any preparation.

 Makes them address and analyze the issue on the spot.

 Improves logical thinking and reasoning ability in a learner.

 It is an excellent training exercise for future leaders.

OBJECTIVE: It is the test of a student’s knowledge about a topic as well as

his/her ability to express themselves in good words in a framed manner within a
limited time. 

THEORY: Extempore speaking is the term used for a non-formally prepared

speech. Explaining to your parents why you arrived home later than your
curfew is a form of extempore speaking. When you watch a beauty pageant on
television and the contestants have to draw a question and answer it for the

judges, they are extempore speaking. Every time you speak you are preparing
for extempore speaking. You probably prepare without even knowing it. You
have to read to learn new things for this type of speaking. When doing
extempore speaking, you need to use the knowledge that you have and use a
strong delivery.

There comes a time in every one's life when he or she will have to give an
impromptu speech. It may be for anything - a radio interview, a teacher trying to
get you to speak up in class, or even in a casual debate. It happens more often
than most people would think. The words we speak are chosen at the point of
delivery and they flow back and forth, with communication being two-way,
three-way or four-way. It is all done without any preparation.

The key to extempore speaking is that the words spoken are chosen as we speak
them, and what is delivered is a stream of consciousness that is fluent, erudite
and articulate, while being unscripted. Effective extempore speaking always has
the purpose of the presentation and the impact on the audience at its heart. In an
extempore/impromptu speaking, it is important to speak to the purpose and to
consider carefully what effect you want to have on your audience, then the
notion that it is possible to simply choose the right words at the point of
delivery, without any kind of preparation, is at best naive and at worst
disastrous. Even the few who are capable of it will admit to significant
preparation when the stakes are high.

Not only that, you have to consider how long to speak for. Effective speakers, in

their preparation, also consider the audience at all times. They ensure that they
speak to the audience they have in front of them, rather than the audience they
would like to have in front of them.

APPARATUS: None

PROCEDURE: Every student will be given a different topic and one minute
to speak on the spot.

Sample: Importance of reading newspapers.

Newspaper provides us with information collected from around the globe. It

also helps to develop new ideas, and at times guide the common man how to
think and discuss.

We may say that today we are living in a newspaper culture. Whether in English
or other regional languages, almost every man gets benefited from newspaper.

A newspaper acts an important medium to control corruption and scams. The

chief topics of general interest in newspaper includes politics, social issues,
sports, economy, movies, and share market.

Newspaper is a mode of mass communication. It is very helpful in creating

social awareness. Newspaper raises voices against social issues such as child
labor, dowry system, etc. They urge the common people to act and behave in a
rational manner.

We get the information of the forthcoming movies and television shows through
a newspaper. It also contains a list of multiplexes with time-schedule for the
movies.

A wide coverage of information is obtained at low cost though newspaper. It

also influences the habit of thinking in men. It has also seen that illiterate adults
are taking up education to read newspaper.

There are such dailies that trade on such dirty tricks for survival. Being
politically left or right, they misrepresent strikes and lockouts. Events like bank
robbery and train accident or similar untoward events are distorted or
exaggerated. They deliberately make their news sensational because it appeals
to the less educated and less cultured more directly.

The dignity and reputation of a newspaper rests on the degree of their fidelity to

truth and fearless reporting. It is our cheapest and most powerful weapon in the
last analysis.

PRECAUTIONS:

 Avoid negative gestures.

 There should be proper Body language.
 Do not let the mind go wayward.
 Be Specific.
 Do not get nervous.
 Maintain proper eye contact.

RESULT & DISCUSSION: From the above practical it is clear that the
students must know how to speak on the spot in any situation. It will help
them to improve their communication skills and will develop confidence.
