Job Sheet 1
System Overview
OBJECTIVE In this job, you will identify the main components of the Refrigeration Training System. You will
then run the LVHVAC software and record data on the system components in an inspection
report.
1. Figure 3 shows a functional diagram of the Refrigeration Training System. Fill in the blanks
below by identifying each of the components pointed by the arrows in Figure 3.
OBJECTIVE
In this job, you will study the operation and characteristics of the following components of the Refrigeration Training
System: compressor, liquid receiver, filter/drier, liquid indicator, and suction line accumulator.
PROCEDURE
Compressor
1. Record below the name of each compressor component, as identified by the letters in Figure
17.
The tubing that goes to the suction inlet of the compressor comes from the outlet of the _discharge line__.
The tubing going out of the discharge outlet of the compressor, which is bent into several loops, is connected to
the inlet of the _suction line_.
3. On the Refrigeration Training System, locate the two components found in the previous step
and follow their connection path to the compressor/condenser assembly.
Refrigerant: _R-134a_______
5. Figure 19 shows the liquid receiver of the Refrigeration Training System, located at the back of the
trainer beneath a protective plate. This device is used to store __liquid refrigerant from the
condenser.
6. Record below the name of each part of the liquid receiver, as identified by the letters in Figure 19.
a. _Inlet (from condenser outlet)_
b. _Rotalock valve_____________
c. _Outlet (to filter/drier) _______
Figure 19. Identifying the receiver parts.
7. The tubing that goes to the inlet of the liquid receiver comes from the outlet of the __condenser__.
The tubing that goes out of the liquid receiver is equipped with a _Rotalock__ for initial filling
purposes, and it is connected to the _inlet_ on the trainer front panel.
8. Refer to Figure 19. According to the manufacturer's label affixed on the liquid receiver, record the
following manufacturer's information:
Refrigerant compatibility: _R12, R22, R134a, R404a & R507_
Is the liquid receiver compatible with the refrigerant R-134a used in the Refrigeration Training System?
Yes No
9. On the front panel of the Refrigeration Training System, examine the filter/drier, located just
downstream of the solenoid valve. The filter/drier removes __contaminants__ from the flowing
refrigerant to prevent clogging of the _ small restriction of the expansion device_ and damage to the
compressor. The drier collects and holds _moisture_ from the refrigerant.
10. On the filter/drier, observe that there is an arrow. What does this arrow indicate?
The arrow indicates the direction of refrigerant flow.
11. Locate the moisture/liquid indicator just downstream of the filter/drier. Observe that liquid refrigerant
can be seen flowing through the sight glass. Too much bubbles or foaming seen through this glass can
indicate
a. a lack of refrigerant.
b. a low discharge pressure.
c. some form of restriction in the liquid line.
d. All of the above.
12. Determine the moisture content of the refrigerant. To do so, match the color of the sensing element of
the moisture/liquid indicator to one of the colors on the surrounding scale. Is the system dry, wet, or
within the caution area?
The color of the sensing element changes as the amount of moisture in the refrigerant
changes. By matching the color of the element with the colors on the surrounding scale, the
moisture content can be determined. With refrigerant R-134a, for example, dark blue is often
used to indicate a dry system and a salmon color indicates a wet system.
13. Figure 20 shows the suction line accumulator of the Refrigeration Training System, located at the back
of the trainer beneath a protective plate. The suction line accumulator is used to prevent sudden
surges of __liquid refrigerant__ and _oil_ from reaching the compressor.
14. Record below the name of each part of the suction line accumulator, as identified by the letters
in Figure 20.
a. __Outlet (to compressor) __
