Status of Approvals:
IMO and USCG

The SeaCURE system has IMO/USCG AMS approvals for all salinities (fresh,
brackish and sea)

IMO Type Approval has been issued by the

German flag state authority Bundesamt für
Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH).

USCG AMS accepted for all three salinities.

USCG Type Approval land based Brackish water
tests were completed in MERC. Currently 4 out of
5 fresh water tests completed at GSI facility and 4
of 5 Shipboard tests have concluded up to date;

Filter bio-fouling protection
Keeps it clean during algae bloom
The SeaCURE system incorporates a patented filter bio-fouling protection system as a standard feature - a continuous
low dose of Sodium Hypochlorite is injected at the filter inlet when the BWMS is in use.

Page 16
Side-Stream Electrochlorination
Multiple benefits

Minimal changes to BW Main

· Fitting of the ballast water filter is the only major adaptation to the ballast water piping
system – the side-stream inlet and injection points are only small pipe take-off adaptations

Advantages of having a low flow side-stream:

· Doesn’t result in any pressure drop in the BW system;
· Provides predictable, consistent and accurate chlorine dose control;
· Allows efficient degassing

A single electrolyser unit can treat twin ballast lines using multiple
dosing pumps, if desired.

Flexible footprint – modular or compact versions

Chloropac technology
The foundation of SeaCURE

The “core” of the SeaCURE system uses Chloropac technology; a system designed and developed over 40 years
ago and widely used today to combat marine growth in sea water cooling circuits.

• Decades of experience

• Over 3,000 systems operating on ships, rigs and FPSOs

• Proven and trusted in the most challenging applications

Page 18
What is Chloropac?
The self-cleaning, robust chlorine generator

CHLOROPAC is the trademark of Evoqua Water Technologies for an Electrolytic OVERALL REACTION:

Sodium Hypochlorite generating system which operates on the principle of NaCl + H2O
DC current
NaOCl + H2 Gas
electrolysis of salt water. Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) provides a cost-efficient
alternative to using bulk chlorine.
The Chloropac cell design uses Concentric Tubular Electrode (CTE) technology. Chloropac
cells comprise polarised titanium tubes - one inside the other - with the seawater
(electrolyte) flowing through the annular space between the inner and outer tubes
(electrodes).

Sea Water - +

© 2014 Evoqua Water Technologies LLC www.evoqua.com

Page 19
Benefits of the Concentric Tube Electrode design
The self-cleaning, robust chlorine generator

The CTE cell is designed with sufficient flow-through velocity to continuously self-flush the cell during
operation. This prevents calcareous deposits from building up on the cell’s electrocatalytic surfaces.

Self-cleaning –
· No scale
· No need for acid wash or polarity reversal maintenance

Superior performance –
· Proprietary Platinum coating
· Extremely durable and efficient at water temperatures as low as 0⁰C
· Resists contamination with manganese or iron oxide in polluted water
· Life expectancy of the cells is 60,000 hours depending on operating conditions.

The Chloropac cell system is modular – scaling a wide range of different outputs is simple and accurate

© 2014 Evoqua Water Technologies LLC www.evoqua.com

Page 20
CTE vs Plate Cell design
Keeping it clean is a key

Plate cell requires cleaning:

§ If acid wash is late - complete blockage by calcareous
deposits

§ Acid wash / polarity reversal may not restore the cell

performance

§ Logistics and safety of acid availability and storage / use

§ Operating water temperature limitations

Page 21
General Corrosion Mitigation
Safety minded

Tank and coating corrosion testing:

Evoqua undertook extensive testing over a period of 6 months to assess the corrosive effects of treated seawater. The test
program took place in Singapore under the supervision of the Class Society GL. and lasted for 6 months

Tests concluded that the SeaCURE BWMS control logic and dose level mitigates the possible corrosive effect of
chlorine addition to ballast water piping and tanks.

Page 22
Center-Tapping Electrical Design:
Eliminates stray current induced corrosion

SeaCURE: no stray current = no pipe corrosion:

§ Both inlet and outlet of the cell are under the same ground No Stray
(hull) potential Current
§ Stray current is fully contained – will not result in piping
system corrosion

T/R

- Other System
+
T/R
Stray Current

Competitors’ Plate Electrode Cells are a source of stray

current:
§ If proper measures are not taken, stray current may lead to corrosion
of piping and equipment both upstream (pumps, strainer) and
downstream of the electrolyzer
Stray Current

Safety:
Hydrogen production and removal

Hydrogen production is a by-product of the Electrochlorination (EC) process: the amount of hydrogen produced
is proportional to the amount of hypochlorite produced.

A significant amount of hydrogen gas is produced during

electrolysis and this could lead to high hydrogen
concentration levels building up within the ballast tank.

Removal of the hydrogen by degassing during the process

using side stream is the only method of avoiding
hydrogen gas build up in the ballast tank.

Ballasting in Fresh Water:
It is proven that SeaCURE system works in Fresh Water –
Currently the only AMS approved side stream EC system for all 3 salinities
When treating ballast water in fresh water, an alternative feed source having a higher salt content must be used
(e.g. stored in APT). ALL EC SYSTEMS REQUIRE STORED SW
SeaCURE SW storage requirement = (1% of BW Flow) x (Hours of Ballasting)

The SeaCURE system incorporates a water salinity

(conductivity) analyser that advises the operator and
system when the water being ballasted has insufficient
salt content for economic chlorine production.

Dual Purpose option:
Cost Benefit - Serve as MGPS (Marine Growth Protection System) at Sea
Bio-fouling control of the main and auxiliary cooling circuits using the SeaCURE Dual-Purpose
Option is highly effective and offers several benefits –
· Increased cooling system efficiency and associated fuel savings
· Replaces expensive Cu/Al anode system
· Reduced cooler cleaning / maintenance requirements
· ROI (return on investment) - BWMS is multi-functional

De-chlorination on discharge:
If necessary
We will help to select a dechlorination unit that best suits your operation:
• Various design/chemical options available
• Chlorine decays naturally over time. This makes the usage of dechlorination chemical unnecessary
after long BW holding times
• The dechlorination system adjusts automatically and only operates when chlorine is still present
• Dechlorination chemical sodium sulfite is easy to handle and available worldwide. A 40% Bisulfite
solution will be available soon as well
