Isopropanolamines Equivalent Weight and Amine Number


How is the equivalent weight of an isopropanolamine determined?

Equivalent weight is a calculated value determined from the amine number (also known
as the amine value or amine alkalinity).  The amine number is determined by titration of
the amine acetate ion by a dilute, typically 1N HCl solution.  For pure material, the
amine number can be calculated using the molecular weights of the pure compound
and KOH (56.1 g/mol).

Calculations: 
a) Amine Number (by titration):

(A x N x 56.1)/g sample = Amine Number (mg KOH/g)

A = mL of HCl titrant consumed


N = Normality of HCl titrant
g = sample weight in grams
b) Amine Number (of pure material):

1000 x 56.1/MW of material= Amine Number (mg KOH/g)


c) Equivalent Weight can be determined by:

(56.1 x 1000)/Amine number = Equivalent Weight
