SHORT HISTORY:
Magugpo, the city’s former name, was nothing but a vast wilderness,
inhabited by the Mansakas, Manguangans, Mandayas and the Kalagans in
the coastal barangays. The name Magugpo was derived from the native
word mago, a name of a certain tree, and ugpo means very high.
The first real transformation of Magugpo occurred when the first immigrant,
an intrepid pioneer from Moalboal, Cebu, by the name Sulpicio Quirante,
came in October 1929. More migrants came from the Visayas and Luzon.
These included Cebuanos like Hermogenes Alburo Misa who owns "Misa
District" and was Married to Balbina Narisma Misa. Their family owns
almost all of the land in the heart of Tagum.
The City of Golden Opportunities, The Palm City of the Philippines, The
Music Capital of the South, The City of Festivals, The Cultural Center of
Mindanao and The City of Parks.
