Lesson 12
Financial Aid Reflection

1. Federal Financial Aid- What are the different types of federal financial aid available to
students? How do you apply for federal financial aid? What benefits do students receive
from this type of financial aid? Federal student aid from ED covers such expenses as
tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation. Aid can also
help pay for other related expenses, such as a computer and dependent care.

2. State Financial Aid- What are the different types of state aid available to students? How
do you apply for state financial aid? What benefits do students receive from this type of
financial aid? You can qualify for many different grants, scholarships, and other types of
aid by filling out the FAFSA and referring to your state higher education agency to see
what's available. In some cases, you might even be eligible for a tuition discount in
another state.

3. School Specific Financial Aid- Which schools did you research? Describe one grant or
scholarship that is offered at each school. What benefits do students receive from this
type of financial aid? I researched Citrus College. One grant that is offered there is called
the General Biology Transfer Scholarship. Recipients must have completed Biology 105
(General Biology) with a letter grade of “B” or better; must be transferring to a four-year
institution in the upcoming summer or fall semester. The award is $500.

4. Private Scholarships- Describe two scholarships that you found interesting during your
research. What are the benefits of using this type of aid to fund your education? Two
scholarships that I found interesting during my research were the Osher scholarship and
the Patricia L Knox Memorial scholarship. The Osher scholarship awards go to students
with greatest financial need. Students must be subject to Board of Governors fee
waiver. Must have completed 24 units of degree-applicable study prior to disbursement
of scholarship. 6 units minimum for partial award. Awarded per semester. The Patricia L
Knox Memorial scholarship for Citrus College June graduates with a high GPA above 3.0
transferring to an accredited nursing school and pursuing a BS in nursing. Students in
related medical fields will be considered but priority is given to nursing students.

5. Military Financial Aid- Do you or your family plan to or have served in the military? If so,
describe at least one military financial aid program that is available to you? What
benefits do students receive from this type of financial aid? No available military
financial programs are available to me because no one in my family has served in the
military. All service members are eligible for federal student aid. This includes those who
are active duty, in the reserves, veterans, retirees and those who are benefiting from
other military programs, like the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

6. Personal Financial Aid Plan- After reviewing the different types of financial aid available
to students, what plan do you have for covering the costs of post-secondary education?

Lesson 12
Write a paragraph that summarizes the total cost you expect to pay for post-secondary
education, the sources of aid you plan to use to cover these costs, and when and how
you plan to apply for each program. You may also need to consider alternate sources of
income such as a college fund or savings plan that has already been set aside. After
financial aid, I will be expecting to pay $3,542 for annual tuition at Citrus college. I plan
to use state financial aid and apply for scholarship grants this month.
