23-52-00 RADIO MANAGEMENT (NAS)

1. GENERAL
The Radio Management function provides pilots with a means to manage and tune radios (Radio Communications and Radio Navigation) and external
protection equipment (XPDR : Transponder, TCAS : Traffic Collision Avoidance System) during flight.

Management of Radio COM, Radio NAV and External Protection functions from the cockpit are performed by two Radio Management Applications (RMAs).
The RMAs check validity of input data and provide feedbacks.

The tuning of RMA information is provided :

- Firstly via Multifunction Control Panels (MCP) associated with the Virtual Control Panel (VCP) displayed on the Multi-Function Display (MFD).
- Secondly via the Multipurpose Control Display Units (MCDU).

2. RADIO MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The RMS (Radio Management System) is composed of two redundant RMAs and each RMA manages its own side.
The Radio Management Applications (RMA1 and RMA2) are software applications hosted in Multi Function Display MFD1 (DU2) and MFD2 (DU4) that manage
radio parameters (frequencies, modes…) through VCP and MCDU.
The flight crew interact with the RMA software via the VCP and the MCDU.
The RMA is redundant and each RMA is affected as follows :
- RMA1 manages pilot interface with VCP1 and MCDU1 for radio tuning and for ATC/TCAS control.
- RMA2 manages pilot interface with VCP2 and MCDU2 for radio tuning and for ATC/TCAS control.

(Ref. Fig. 002, Fig. 003, Fig. 004)

B. SYSTEM LOCATION
- The two Radio Management Applications (RMA1 and RMA2) are software hosted inside Multi Function Display MFD1 (DU2) and MFD2 (DU4).
- The tuning means are listed in the table below :

Functional Designation Panel Zone

MCP (Multi function Control Panel) 8VU 210

VCP (Virtual Control Panel) 3VU / 5VU 210
MCDU (Multi purpose Control Display Unit) 8VU 210
(Ref. Fig. 001)

C. POWER SUPPLY
The two RMAs are hosted in the MFD1 (DU2) and MFD2 (DU4) which are supplied with 28VDC as follows :

3. RADIO MANAGEMENT SYSTEM OPERATION

A. NORMAL OPERATION
The Radio Management System manages radio tuning for the following sub-functions :
• Radio-communication tuning sub-function :
- Basic VHF-COM radios are tuned by Radio Management function to provide pilots with a means to communicate in voice with the ground or
another aircraft, when aircraft is flying in continental area when VHF coverage is available.
- Optional HF-COM radios (Single HF : POST MOD 5961, DUAL HF : POST MOD 5960) are tuned by the Radio Management function to provide
pilots with a means to communicate in voice with the ground or another aircraft, when VHF coverage is poor or unavailable (oceanic flight areas,
polar flight areas,...).
(Ref. Fig. 002)
• Radio-navigation tuning sub-function :
- VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) for bearing to the selected VOR ground station. VOR helps to the navigation in flight.
- ILS (Instrument Landing System) for the vertical (Glide Slope) and the horizontal (Localizer) deviations to the ILS centerline. ILS helps to approach
phase.
- Marker to confirm the position on the centerline of the runway.
- DME (Distance Measurement Equipment) for the slant distance to the ground station usually paired to the selected VOR. DME helps to the
navigation in flight. DME provides pilots with distance information with the selected beacon.
- ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) for the relative bearing to the ADF selected ground station. ADF helps to the navigation in flight.
(Ref. Fig. 003)
• ATC/TCAS mode selection and control sub-function :
- XPDR Mode S to provide aircraft parameters to the ground, and support the TCAS function.
- TCAS to provide a Traffic Anti-collision function.
(Ref. Fig. 004)

RMAs receive radios parameters from tuning means and send them to the radio concerned. Radio returns parameters to both RMAs. Each RMA returns
information to “its” tuning means : RMA1 returns to MCDU1 & VCP1, RMA2 returns to MCDU2 & VCP2. The RMA checks validity of input data and provides
visual feedbacks. It :
- Checks that pilot entries are the correct ones (for frequency entry),
- Checks that pilot command is well taken into account by radios (COM, NAV, ATC/TCAS),
- Makes sure that the data returned by the radios (COM, NAV, ATC/TCAS) are valid.

Both RMAs (RMA1 and 2) are synchronized. Following cases are identified for data synchronization between RMA1 and RMA2 :

• Case1 : Data to be synchronized but not sent to the radios, with no feedback from the radios associated.
Upon new pilot valid entry through the VCP or MCDU tuning means, the RMA provides automatically the other side RMA, using ADCN link, with
the new data. This is applicable to the following data :
- Standby frequency related to the selected HFCOM if installed (Single HF : POST MOD 5961, DUAL HF : POST MOD 5960), VHFCOM 1 and 2,
VHFNAV1 (VOR1/ILS1/MKR1/ADF1), VHFNAV2 (VOR2/ILS2/MKR2 and ADF2 if installed (POST MOD 5963)),
- Preset frequencies related to the selected HFCOM if installed (Single HF : POST MOD 5961, DUAL HF : POST MOD 5960), VHFCOM1 and 2,
VHFNAV1 (VOR1/ILS1/MKR1/ADF1), VHFNAV2 (VOR2/ILS2/MKR2 and ADF2 if installed (POST MOD 5963)).

• Case2 : Data to be synchronized and sent to the radios, with no feedback from the radios associated : as only one RMA sends data to the radio, the other
is informed of the change.
Upon new pilot valid command through the VCP or MCDU tuning means, the RMA provides automatically the other side RMA, using ADCN link,
with the new command. This is applicable to the following command :
- Squelch control level related to the selected VHFCOM,
- Flight Ident command related to the selected XPDR.

• Case3 : Data to be synchronized and sent to the radios, with feedback from the radios associated : synchronization is necessary due to architecture
chosen (master or slave RMA) for ATC and TCAS controls.
Upon new pilot valid command through the VCP or MCDU tuning means, the RMA provides automatically the other side RMA, using ADCN link,
with the new command. This is applicable to the following command :
- XPDR code, Mode, Alt mode, Selection, Ident Mode activation command, EMER related to the selected XPDR,
- TCAS Mode, Display mode related to the TCAS.
(Ref. Fig. 005)

B. DEGRADED OPERATION
- On loss of one RMA (degraded scenario in flight), two ADCN links between VCPs and RMAs allow pilots to tune radios on their own VCPs with the RMA
still available. Moreover, the pilot can tune through his MCDU the RMA still available (both RMAs are connected to each MCDU).
Any parameter or control that is no more available or failed will be displayed in amber; the label will depend on the source of the error.
(Ref. Fig. 002, Fig. 003, Fig. 004)

- An Integrated Electronic Standby Instrument (IESI) provides pilots with a backup means to tune radios (only VHF COM1, VHF NAV1
(VOR1/ILS1/MKR1/ADF1), DME1 and DME2 (POST MOD 5962) in addition to VCPs and MCDUs. (Covered by MSI 34-20-00)

C. CONTROL AND DISPLAY

The control of radio parameters sent to RMA and the display of radio feedback checked by RMA are done via VCP and MCDU :

(1) Virtual Control Panel / Multi Function Control Panel (VCP/MCP) :

VCP is a part of MFD (DUs 2 and 4). It is displayed on the bottom right of MFD.
The Multi Function Control Panel (MCP) provides the control of VCP. It permits to access to the Virtual Control Panel on the same side. The VCP page is
displayed by :
- Pressing “COM” button on MCP for radio-communication tuning,
- Pressing “NAV” button on MCP for Radio-navigation tuning,
- Pressing “SURV” button on MCP for TCAS/XPDR controls.

(Ref. Fig. 006, Fig. 007)

(2) Multi purpose Control Display Unit (MCDU) :

MCDU is a device used to tune several equipment. To tune radio or TCAS/XPDR parameters, an RMS has to be selected on the first menu page. Then
Communication page is displayed with the possibility to select the radio-communication, Radio-navigation or TCAS/XPDR parameters to be tuned.
