Issue Description
Operators reported inoperative Twin Motor Actuators (TMA) following ECAM fault
messages.
The twin motor actuators (PNFRH0100041) are used in a number of positions on
the A330 and A340 family aircraft. These locations are the Low Pressure Shut Off
Valve (LPSOV); Jettison Valve; Crossfeed Valve; and Emergency Isolation Valve.
Typical symptoms relating to the failure of these Twin Motor Actuators include,
for example ECAM messages such as FUEL ENG x LP VALVE FAULT, or failed
Operational checks. Intermittent actuator positions on the Fuel SD page have
also been reported.
Consequence
Failure of the twin motor actuator can lead to spurious ECAM messages, often
relating to LPSOV faults as well as Jettison valve failures. This in turn can lead to
delays.
Investigation Status
Inoperative TMAs were returned to vendor for investigation. Two main causes of
failure have been highlighted.
The main cause of failure was internal corrosion, however the strip down of some
actuators revealed that the micro-switch trip arm switch angles were out of
specification. A third cause related to a quality issue of connector assemblies has
also been determined.
The quality issue (trip arm modification) has been corrected by Q4 2008 on P/N
FRH010041 manufactured from this date.
The internal motor corrosion issue has been rectified as part of the TMA
improvements by changing the sealing of the TMA to prevent water ingress into
the actuator.
The root cause of the intermittent indication is due to a quality issue, which may
affect connector assemblies manufactured between FEB 01 and JUNE 04 (last 4
digits of S/N indicate MONTH and YEAR of manufacture). The current build
standard of connectors reflects a quality improvement. Whilst the likelihood of
failure of these actuators is low, based on the vendor's feedback, the
replacement of the TMAs belonging to the identified batch may decrease the
potential of this type of failure.
Further to these investigations and findings Eaton and Airbus have developed an
improved Twin Motor Actuator. This addresses the identified quality issues and
the corrosion of the internal motors.
Maintenance Information
In case of AOG situation, we recommend operators to replace the relevant TMA
and test the system to confirm that the fault has been cleared.
Alternatively, should operators wish to confirm the identified twin motor actuator
is defective the following steps below provide troubleshooting recommendations:
1) Gain access to the actuator in accordance with AMM 28-23-51 PB 401 or 28-
24-51 PB 401.
2) Disconnect the actuator power lead and secure.
3) Make sure that the actuator is in closed position. With a multimeter, do a
check for continuity between pins E and B of connector assembly R1. Make sure
that the indication on the multimeter is below 1 ohm.
4) Operate the actuator to the open position. With a multimeter, do a check for
continuity between pins E and D of connector assembly R1. Make sure that the
indication on the multimeter is below 1 ohm.
5) If either test 3) or 4) fails replace actuator in accordance with AMM 28-23-51
PB 401 or 28-24-51 PB 401.
Repercussion on A/C Dispatch
Please refer to the MEL for the valve dispatch conditions at the various location
on the aircraft.
Solution
The issue of trip arm switch angles is confirmed as a quality issue. Eaton have
taken the necessary corrective actions and Airbus will continue to monitor rate of
return.
Eaton as part of the investigation developed a modified Twin Motor Actuator, P/N
FRH010041 AMDT A. This actuator is modified by reinforcing against moisture
ingress by application of a new paint skin. This actuator has been tested via in-
service evaluation. This in-service evaluation has been successful when
compared with the standard FRH010041 TMA, and has led to development of the
new standard of actuator.
The new TMA is further improved from the AMDT A standard, and has
undertaken a more vigorous environmental testing regime during qualification
than previously used for TMA development. This actuator has improved
resilience towards internal corrosion, with production quality issues addressed.
The new Twin Motor Actuator has been introduced as a preferred spare part in
the October 2009 revision of the IPC. The new Twin Motor Actuator has P/N 53-
0014.
