SEMESTER 5 (BATCH-2019)

Total duration: 18 Week

PROJECT TITLE – “Artist’s Village”,

Introduction
An artist is the one who remains engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts or
demonstrating an art. Artists prefer to work alone that helps them to concentrate on expressing through their art.
Also at times they prefer to work in clusters or groups so as to facilitate exchange of views and knowledge
leading to refinement in their vision that helps them in looking at world in new ways.
Keeping this in mind a concept of Artists Village has evolved with time. Like in a village there is clustered human
settlement or community where dwellings are fairly close to one another, the close proximity helps in
strengthening the bonding between people living there. An environment with such similar characteristics can be
good for some human purpose and in this case for artists involved in evolving their art.
The term Artists Village is used as a metaphor. It is a hub for creative minds such as artists and sculptors, where
they can gather all together to share their knowledge and experience through their artworks. The village tends to
support increasing interaction, seminars, lectures and workshop programmes that facilitate engagement between
internationally renowned arts professionals and local communities through participatory artworks, lectures, and
workshops. So, the main focus of an artist’s village can be listed down as follows:
 To design a space for the creative minds of the country to share their experience and thoughts in a
serene environment where they can feel they belong to.
 To increase the sense of community among the resident artists through artistic exploration.
 To give the young minds a relief from the hustle and bustle of urban sprawl.
 To showcase the works of prominent artists to the international audience and curious minds of art.
 To encourage creation of environments responsive to the arts.
 To conserve culture and tradition.

SEMESTER 5 (BATCH-2019)

Design Criteria:

The proposal must aim to:

 To design a development on a sloping site that integrates sensitively into the environment in which it is
located.
 The design should adapt to its context, responsive of its local architecture, climatic conditions and taking
maximum advantage of its topography with minimized core cutting, maximum use of natural light and
ventilation.
 To create open spaces that are sociable – exciting and relaxing – places where people can get together
with family and friends,
 Understanding the building planning using steel as the main material for construction (for the exhibition
spaces also for other structure if one find it appropriate) along with other materials for building
construction.
 Understanding the appropriate location of fire exit staircase, width of the staircase for public buildings
upto four storied.
 Provision of services; commercial kitchen, toilets, ducts, shafts etc.
 Fulfil the functional requirement and relationships between different components listed for the proposed
design problem detailed in the table above.
 To inculcate the climate responsiveness as an integral part of architectural design. Provision of
insulation walls roofs, solar panels etc.
 Demonstrate your choice of materials for the proposed project duly related to the surroundings.

Design limitations
 The built form on site should be placed keeping in mind the approach from the road and also taking
advantage of the existing contours.
 The functional requirements be such that the common facilities lie close to the approach road
 The students are free to zone the site to be inhabited as well plan the area around with trees and other
landscaping features.
