School: Julian Cho Technical High School Unit Topic: Statistics 2

Subject: Mathematics Date & Duration: Aug. 26 – Sept. 13, 2013 (3 weeks)
Class: 4 Agric., 4 Bus., 4 Const., 4 H/M, 4 Sci. Facilitators: Mr. Samuel Ack, Ms. Delis Roches &
Mr. Francisco Recinos

Introduction:
Statistics has become an important part of everyday life. At the ending of three weeks students will be acquainted with basic
principles in calculating the central tendencies and measures of dispersion. We are confronted by them when we discuss the cost of
living, unemployment, medical breakthroughs, weather predictions, sports, politics and the state lottery. Although we are not always
aware of it, each of us is an informal statistician. We are constantly gathering, organizing and analysing information and using this
data to make judgements and decisions that will affect our actions.

Rationale:
In this unit of study, students will improve their understanding of the elementary topics included in statistics. The unit will
begin by discussing terms that are commonly used in statistics. It will then proceed to explain and construct frequency distributions,
histograms, frequency polygons and cumulative frequency polygons. Next, the unit will define and compute measures of central
tendency including the mean, median and mode of a set of numbers. Measures of dispersion including range and standard deviation
will be discussed. The unit will help students towards the preparation for ATLIB and CXC candidates.

Unit Goals:
a) To define the statistical terminologies.
b) To collect raw data
c) To arrange data in a group frequency table
d) To represent data on a histogram
e) To calculate the statistical averages:
Mean, Median and Mode
f) To find the measures of dispersion:
Range, Quartiles and Standard Deviation
g) To construct the cumulative frequency curve
h) To find relative frequency and experimental probability
