PART-B(5x16=80 Marks)
11.(a) A reinforced concrete beam is supported on two walls (16) CO1
250mm thick spaced at a clear distance of 6m. the beam
carries a super imposed load of 9.8kn/m design the beam
using M20 concrete and HYSD bars of Fe 415 grade.
1
(or)
11.(b) Design a short spiral column subjected to Pu=2100kn and (16) CO1
Mu=187.5kn.m using M25 grade of concrete and Fe415 of
steel. The preliminary diameter of the column may be taken
as 500mm.
12.(a) A reinforced concrete deep beam girder is continuous over (16) CO2
a span of 9m apart from center to centre. It is 4.5 m deep,
300mm thick and the supports are column of 900mm in
with. If the girder supports a uniformly distributed load of
200kn/m including its own weight design the beam for
necessary steel. Assume M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
(or)
12.(b) A concrete column of 400 mm diameter, reinforced with 8 (16) CO2
bars of 20mm diameter is braced and hinged at both ends,
8m apart. Check the safety of the column if it carries a
factored axial load of 1100kn. Take concrete of M20 grade
and steel of 415 grade. The reinforcement has an effective
cover of 60mm.
13.(a) A flat slab with 7.5m x 6m panels on 500x500mm columns (16) CO3
has a slab thickness of 185mm, designed for a total
characteristic load of 9.3kn/m. check the safety of slab if M
25 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel are used for its
construction. How do you increase the shear capacity of the
slab?
(or)
13.(b) The peripheral spandrel beam of a flat slab is 250mm x (16) CO3
475mm in size and the depth of the main slab is 175mm. the
transverse distribution of moments at the end-span results
in a negative moment of 5.8kn.m for the half column strip,
and 1.6kn.m for the half middle strip, the total negative
moment being 7.4kn.m on each side the column. Determine
torsional moment for which the spandrel beam should be
designed. Assume fck=20N/mm2.
14 (a) i. A circular column is 350 mm diameter. Find the diameter (10) CO4
and spacing of hoops to be used for confident assuming that

2
the concrete used is M20 and the steel is Fe 500. What will
be the lateral reinforcements if the column is rectangular of
600 x 500 mm in size?
ii Write detailed notes on moment curvature relation of (06) CO4
reinforced concrete section.
(or)
14 (b) i. What are the assumptions made and steps involved in (08) CO4
Baker’s method of limit analysis of redundant RC frames?
Explain.

ii Explain moment rotation curvature relationship for (08) CO4

balanced, over, under reinforced beams with neat sketches?
15 (a) In a multi-storey reinforced concrete frame building located (16) CO5
at channel, a typical column of 3.4m clear height carries an
axial load of 3500kn and a bending moment of 780kn.m
under gravity and seismic load conditions. Design the
column section with adequate ductility using M25 grade
concrete and Fe415 grade steel.
(or)
15 (b) i. Enumerate the general guidelines to be followed in the (8) CO5
design and detailing of reinforced concrete structure to
ensure sufficient ductility.
ii Discuss the need for the provision of ductility in RC framed (8) CO5
structures when subjected to earthquake loads and state the
methods of providing ductility in RC framed structures.
