Statement Of Intent
For my Year 12 HSC Major Project, I intend to establish a short cartoon horror/thriller film. I
will be extending myself in this project, as creating a horror-based film is something I have I’m
inspired to create, but I believe it would showcase everything I have learnt in the multimedia
field and allow me to demonstrate my range of skills and talents, and showcase them in quality
production. I have chosen this particular genre of film to study and create, because not only am I
interested in the horror/thriller category of film, I think it will challenge me. My Storyline will be
similar to the ideas of The Conjuring 2 or IT 2 different well-known horror films as it explores
the idea of horror also depicting a petrifying horror character such as shapeshifting monster who
takes the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown or a possessed nun thus involving the setting of
a house.
I intend to create this project over the period of 10 months, utilising all of the time given to do
this project. To complete this, extensive research will have to be conducted to delve into the
genre of horror and thriller. This will include tips and techniques such as the power of
cinematography lighting and the powerful emotions that link with suspense and fear, and how to
replicate this in my short film. Included in this research is the expansion of my extensive
knowledge of Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Adobe InDesign. I will also utilise green
screen on my major project video based on my prior experiences as it will make it easier to shoot
wherever I want.
Rigorous planning will be required for me to complete this project. This includes storyboarding,
scripting, sketching, and designing in-camera special effects, in conjunction with sourcing things
required, such as equipment, suitable actors, suitable location, and acquiring appropriate
software. This portfolio contains documentation of my entire major project, with headings and
subheadings related to the marking criteria of the portfolio.
My target audience ideally will be young adults (17 years) and beyond, and I would establish my
film to accommodate this audience as best I can.
I would have to consider the parameters of this project, more specifically, things that cannot be in
a major work, including inappropriate violence, gore and blood. This has been taken into careful
consideration when I was selecting what to do for my film. To ensure that this is all kept to a
bare minimum, the only time blood will feature in my film will be in my introduction scene, and
there will be very little violence and gore.
Ongoing Evaluation: Statement Of Intent allows me to freely talk about my major project in
depth expressing what I want to do and how I can achieve it. It also showcases my target
audiences and what not to include in my major project.
RESEARCH
Throughout my project, I would use many software/hardware to establish my short- film. These
software and hardware all would have a significant contribution towards the establishment of my
short film e.g. Tripod would be a massive contribution towards the making of my film as used
for still filming for my green screen.

Development Of Ideas
Based from my Year 11 Assessment, I decided that I would make a horror/thriller type film. I
based my ideas, brainstorm, settings, characters and costuming around this idea. My ideas for my
film were not overly broad, more based around a simple storyline, as it would be far easier to
convey the plot of the film with little confusion for the watcher. The storyline is also not marked,
so having a simple storyline would also not hinder or put me at a disadvantage. When
considering the setting, I decided it best to only put down places that were close by and easily
accessed. Given my semi-rural location, this was limited, however, the places that were easily
accessible would most definitely be able to convey a creepy and uneasy vibe. As with the setting,
the costuming would have to be something that I could easily access, and would not be overly
expensive.

Ongoing Evaluation : Timeline allows me to set goals of when each section of the folio is to be
done and also showcases to the teacher what I planned and thus what I achieved over the past 7
weeks on developing my folio.
Tripod Tripod would be a major factor in my project as it prevented the film camera movement
and provided stability whilst recording my greenscreen footage comfortably and
smoothly.
Keyboards Keyboards would play a vital role in my project as it helped me with research, type
documents, use keystroke shortcuts, access menus and most of all edit my videos.
Choosing a keyboard is compulsory as without it I could never potentially establish my
project.
Mouse Similarly to the keyboard, the mouse would also play a vital role in the preparation for
my project as it helped me edit my videos, save files and navigate on the internet.
Choosing a mouse is compulsory as without it I could never potentially establish my
project.
Computer Computer is the most valuable asset in my project as it would help throughout the whole
establishment of my project from editing,to obtaining stock footage,to sound editing etc.
Computers would be my main tool for the creation of my project.
Speakers I would choose speakers for my project as it allowed me to edit my audio and granted me
to listen to my audio perfectly without any disruptions.
Monitor Monitors are compulsory as the school provided us to help create/ edit and establish my
portfolio. Monitors were also helpful in storing our school files in it as it can be easily
accessible while on our personal pc. Monitors are basically computers except with certain
restrictions.
Green Screen
SD Cards I would choose an SD card as it helped store all my footage for my projects such as my
greenscreen footage, stock footage or any Adobe editing files. The Sd card also helped
me to save all recordings from the camera and safely importing them into my personal
computer and my monitor.
Film Camera I would choose a film camera to film my greenscreen footage in HD. Film cameras save
me storage from filming on my phone as it gives me high-resolution videos without
disruption.
Samsung A30 I would choose Samsung A30 because it was an alternative for film cameras as it saved
me time for recording as it automatically saves to my gallery without an SD card.
HP EliteDesk HP Elitedesk was compulsory as it came with my school monitor in order for the monitor
to run windows 10. Without HP Elitedesk the monitor wouldn’t be able to operate
properly.
Samsung 500GB Hard Drive I would choose the Samsung Hard Drive as it was my alternative way of storing all my
files for my multimedia project. Having 500Gb worth of storage conveniently allows me
to store all my files.
SOFTWARES
I’d choose Photoshop to edit pictures e.g. The white/black demon eyes adjoin my video to
Adobe Photoshop provide the spooky/creepy feeling.
I would use Adobe Illustrator rarely as I used it as an alternative to Adobe photoshop only
Adobe Illustrator using vectors creating perfectly smooth lines.
I would choose After Effects as one of the main tools in the process of creation for my major
Adobe After Effects work to add several effects of glitches and edit my greenscreen through the use of Keylight for
keying, tracking and compositing.
Blender I may use Blender to construct my haunted house with textures, lighting and camera movement
making my film look more cinematic and intense.
Adobe Premiere Pro I would choose Premiere Pro to edit the audio/brightness of my short film as it was really
convenient for making my short film fade in and out and consists of many templates e.g.
Glitches and transitions.
I would utilise Google Drive as a main tool in my major project as it makes it easy to share my
Google Drive documents and my files with my peers as well as being another alternative for storing files in
case my videos were missing from my laptop.
Microsoft Excel I would utilise Microsoft Excel in order to establish my timeline for my major work in order to
depict what I’ve done throughout the duration of my establishment of my short film and folio.
Microsoft Word I would use Microsoft Word when I’m on a different PC to type and save documents. Similar
to other word processors, it has helpful tools to make documents.
Google Docs I would choose Google Docs as it'd be my main source of establishing my major project folio
as it allows me to share with my fellow peers or type in all my notes.
Google Classroom I would use Google Classroom to communicate with the teacher and hand in my drafts for my
assignments as well as get ideas from what the teacher posts regularly on the Google
classroom. This makes it easier for my teacher to track my work and for me to ask questions
about a particular area of the subject.
Adobe Audition I would use Adobe Audition to accelerate video production workflows and audio finishing
touches and deliver a polished mix with pristine sound for my major work.
Wondershare Filmora 9 I would use Filmora Wondershare 9 as it acts like both adobe after effects and premiere pro as
it offers a wide range of drop in effects which really can be greatly utilized in my short video
making my major work stand out.
Adobe InDesign I would use Adobe Indesign to create my website as I would transfer all my folio information
into Adobe Indesign making my major work folio more polished and presentable
Adobe Creative Cloud I would use Adobe Creative Cloud to download all the Adobe softwares suchad Adobe
Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects etc. Without Creative Cloud I wouldn't
receive updates and the free Adobe softwares provided from school.
Adobe Muse I would use Adobe Muse to create my website for my major project as to further showcase my
technological skills as well as implement my video and folio all in one place.
PNG For any images requiring an alpha channel or transparency, such as header designs, PNG files will be
the best file for me to use.
MP4 MP4 is the main file type used in my major work as the video will run in MP4 and also my proof
video in which I showcase that all work belongs rightfully to me.
AVI I would use an AVI file to store video and audio data that may be encoded in a variety of codecs. I
would likely not use this file type when rendering my production, as the file size will be massive,
and will possibly not be able to be played on low end computers, and the file type is limited
to Microsoft operating systems only, meaning that Mac and Linux OS' will not be able to play it.
PDF My portfolio would be exported as a PDF, thus allowing it to be read on any operating system, and
will be the easiest to manage when exporting from Illustrator.
MP3 I will be using this file type for my audio, as it is one of the most common file formats, but it can also
be read by most programs, making it extremely versatile and offers much more storage space
compared to other audio files compared to FLAC, WAV or M4A.
Youtube Youtube would really help me learn how to add all the effects on my videos as it gave me a
great learning experience of how adobe softwares and many other software operates.
Books I may choose books because many things can’t always be found in the internet e.g. Adobe
Photoshop CC Classroom in a Book or Adobe After Effects CC Classroom in a Book. These
books would give me a basic guide of how to use these softwares as some Youtube videos can
provide inaccurate or vague information.
Camera Techniques
Over the shoulder This camera angle allows you to see the perspective of another character meaning it can
manifest my perspective and my view to the audience.
Extreme long shot This camera angle creates an intense close up shot like something is about to happen therefore
making the scene intensifying for my short film.
Close - up Close up shots showcase the close version of a character as this can be utilized in my film by
showing the demon entity revealing his scary self in the film.
Compartment Shot Compartment Shot would be another useful camera angle to show the protagonist getting a food
item out of the fridge therefore making it more appealing to my horror film.
Editing Tools
Dissolve I’d choose this editing tool to transition my video from one to another as it can further showcase my
skills of understanding editing techniques.
Lighting Techniques
Background Light Background light is an important lighting technique that would consist in my short film
as it allows the viewers to see the character along with the background.
Soft Light Soft Light would create the glominess and the sense of mystery around my short film as
this would be achieved by my bedroom light.
Ongoing Evaluation: Selection & Justification shows my reasoning behind choosing the
hardwares/softwares and the ideas and what effects I would use that would be showcased in my
major project video such as glitches or cool transitions.
Finance Plan
Ongoing Evaluation: Finance Plan was also time-consuming as I had to go through various
websites to find the prices for each of the software/hardware. The finance plan indicates how
much the hardware or software cost and some hardware/ software I bought whilst others were
provided by the school. This finance plan removes a lot of stress off my back as I am aware of
where and when I need to purchase the products thus not needing to worry about the equipment
beforehand.
Work health and safety (WHS) which also can be called occupational health and safety involves
the management of risks to the health and safety of everyone in your workplace. This includes
the health and safety of anyone who does work for you as well as your customers, visitors and
suppliers. It may initially cost money and time to implement safe practices and install safety
equipment but is critical to the success of your business. Not taking action could also result in
prosecution, fines and loss of your skilled staff. Every year, workplace incidents take lives in
NSW. Compliance with work health and safety (WHS) legislation helps to save lives and reduces
injuries and illnesses to NSW workers.
The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 a legislation enforced by the government provides a
framework to protect the health, safety and welfare of all workers at work. It also protects the

Ergonomics
A well-integrated workplace
will eliminate risk factors,
this leads to more productive
working, with less unwanted
injuries.
Solution:
Always try to take a break occasionally, try to use the correct posture when using a computer
Home Ergonomics
My workspace setup at home is very simple, spacious and comfortable, but not without its
flaws. I have tried to make it as ergonomic as possible, however, there are many limitations of
what I can and cannot do, whether that is due to costs, space or otherwise.
