Online Contest and Student’s involvement and participation

Education is one of the most reliable ways to become successful in life. It is the foundation of most of our
collective goals and ambitions. Fortunately, it has also become more accessible now to children all over the
world thanks to technology. Today, one of the most common and efficient way to disseminate knowledge is
through online competitions. It plays a significant role in the cultivation process of education, knowledge &
success.

To analyze and evaluate the performance and learning of the students, several techniques can be used.
Competitions are one such unique tool to test learning skills on the part of school students. They help to bring
about innovation when it comes to the skill set of students and does it in an engaging and interesting way
unlike any other. It is an effective tool that showcases the raw potential of a student. Once discovered, it can be

forged into a skill or an ability that may change the student’s life for the better. This generation of students is so
tech-friendly that they love to spend most of their time around devices. By tapping into it and using it for
constructive purposes, students can expand their learning horizons.

Online contests are a fantastic experience for students providing them a myriad of opportunities into
demonstrating talents, bringing out the best in oneself, overcoming fear and acclimate to the unknown
challenges. In order to showcase the talent of students our school, Holy Cross & P U College, has organized
many online competitions. The students also get appreciated and awarded for their talents and skills which go a
long way in building their self-confidence and may even introduce them to something they might be passionate
about.

Online contests conducted so far: Drawing competition, Essay writing competition, Spelling bee, Math bee,
Science bee, Handwriting competition, Quiz etc.

There is no limitation of opportunity for aspiring student’s success. Creative minds find the opportunity and
welcome it and online competitions are a great channel for such opportunities. The students, as well as the
institution and society as a whole, benefit from it. With the process of online competition, students are also able
to find solutions for several problems and perhaps discover innovative ideas that may change our society for
the better.

VIRTUAL CLASS – STUDENT PARTICIPATION

By the dawn of 2020 did anyone expect that everything will be through internet? including
classroom, shopping and even work. The regular day to day activities over turned due to the rise
of pandemic situation across the world. Considering the safety of the children and of course
everyone, the classrooms had to be shifted from brick and mortar to virtual class rooms.

This was a paradigm shift for the students and also the teachers, however the shift was inevitable.
Online learning environments offer the learners opportunities for flexibility, interaction and
collaboration distinctly different from face-to-face learning environment. However, the
integration of educational technologies also presents challenges and concerns in relation to
students’ learning.

Since it is a new environment, students find it attractive and participating actively. The benefit of
it had not reached to all the students which is actually a downside of it.

The Holy Cross School Whitefield, Bangalore was one of the earliest to adapt to this
methodology. The students’ participation is triggered by a few of the attractive features of virtual
class room, viz.,

 Attractive presentations
 Virtual projects
 Educational videos
 Online discussions and debates
 Online quizzes
 Online Competitions

The list is not limited to the above. Students find it encouraging with a luxury of attending the
classes from their own comfort zone e.g., Home. The parents are also getting a visibility of what
is being taught and the learning progress of their wards.

The students are finding it easy of attending their virtual exams from their own environment
which aids in attending the exams without fear and tension. The Millennials and later born are
Holy Cross School & PU College, Whitefield, Bengaluru- 66
finding it very easy towards the adaptation of tools and technologies. The reach of tech tools is
available only to the affordable; the penetration of technology should reach every student.

The student’s participation in virtual class room has been very interesting so far, however there
are cons of it. A few of them are monitoring students’ activities are challenging, examinations
are not proctored, exposure to danger side of internet, ergonomic conditions etc.,So, with a
technological advance a student participation in a virtual class room can be more interesting and
effective.

Holy Cross School, Whitefield from its own experience is striving hard to alleviate the cons of
virtual classes and progress the academic well-being of a student seamlessly.

IMPORTANCE OF EXAMINATION

“EXAMS” – the word itself brings anxiety and fear to all of us. Exams are a part of growing up,
they are really important and necessary when it comes to testing knowledge. Examinations are
not meant for creating a feeling of depression among students, they are meant to create a sense of
responsibility among those learners to remember the concepts and present them in the most
valuable form. Exams enhance the child’s overall personality, memory and revision skills.

 Facing Exams is one of the most fundamental quality to develop in growing children so
that they can handle the pressure when they step out in the corporate environment. With
exams, the ability to work and think under pressure becomes primal thus building an
important trait for the overall development of children.
 Competition is healthy if it is taken in an unrivalled way. Some practical exams and
projects help in improving a child’s thinking capability and creates an innovative mind.
 Exams are a way to bring out best minds filled with knowledge, research and
commitment to work. They are a way to empower a person and give him the power to
speak for his knowledge.
 Time management is a critical skill that has to be developed in children to manage their
time efficiently. Exams are conducted in a limited time frame slot so as to teach the
growing minds the importance of time.
 Exams act as a feedback mechanism for both teachers and students. The efforts of the
teachers and the hard work of the students are both reflected in a very appropriate manner
Holy Cross School & PU College, Whitefield, Bengaluru- 66
through exams and assessments. At times it gives a clear picture of what you know and
what you thought you knew.
 Grades matter as they are a measure of your conceptual understanding, memory power
and knowledge.
 Exams instill discipline in Children. The fact that Students have to prepare months in
advance to conquer examinations definitely sets them up for the real world. Discipline is
a key trait of all success stories and exams help children to stay focused and guide them
to prepare routine plans and serve as a knight in shining armour for students who want to
be at top.

We can never think of Education without exams. People face situations in different phases of
their life which tests their life skills, responsibility, presence of mind, decision making,
knowledge, time management and discipline. Exams conducted in school effectively train
students to face the real world.

Mrs. Benita, Physics Teacher

Significance of Responsible Parenting

A responsible parenthood is simply defined as the “will” and ability of parents to respect and do
the needs and aspirations of the children. It is the ability of a parent to detect the need, happiness
and desire of the children and helping them to become humble, trustworthy and responsible
human beings. Parenting involves love, moral values, life skills, knowledge, traditional values
and so on. Most of the children practice the moral values, knowledge and tradition taught by
their parents. The mind and views of the children are deeply shaped by their parents. Children
learn to make sense of what is going on around them by interacting with their parents and
surroundings. Through the eyes of their parents, they learn to see, think, question and look for
answer which can satisfy them. If children are raised in a positive way there is a great
probability that our society would be better off. Parenting is a privilege and responsibility for
shaping a better future for children and thus their future and thereby the society at large.

Parenting Style

Every child needs the right parenting to set the stage for higher achievements and prosperity. In
parenting a child, the parents have to act positively, considering the behavior that the child will
have when they are growing up. Timely correction of mistakes can cement the child’s choice of
Holy Cross School & PU College, Whitefield, Bengaluru- 66
right or wrong from a young age. Truthful, patient and calm parents have a positive influence on
the behavior of their kids. Children learn to respect elders and to whom respect is due by
watching and imitating their parents. Reinforcing the value system in day-to-day situations will
help the child reinforce his/her self-awareness and the discretion of right versus wrong. Truly
integrity, humility, tolerance and humanity are all virtues to be inculcated and reinforced right
from a young age. Indeed these virtues are needed in abundance to mould good leaders, judges,
law-enforcement officials etc. The smallest unit in society being the family, it needs wise and
timely intervention from the parents in shaping their children to become responsible citizens and
more importantly, torch-bearers of truth and humanity.

Communication with Children:

Parents should spend quality time with their children and communicate with them freely, so that
the child would not hesitate to share any issues with them rather than seeking
answers/consolation elsewhere. Thus the child should feel secure and free to discuss all the
pertinent problems or matters of concern with their parents. When they communicate effectively
with parents, it helps the parents to understand the children in a better way and to provide the
right intervention as may be needed.

Proper Parenting:

Proper parenting can be provided by parents who are responsible for catering to all the needs of
their children appropriately. The approach should aim to enhance learning process of children
and help in developing emotional integrity while growing up. Parenting helps a child to be
disciplined with their behavior and the way that they think for themselves and for others. Proper
parenting can be performed by any adult who is passionate enough to provide necessary care for
their children. Needless to say, the ethics and morality practiced by the parents makes a lasting
impression on the child and shapes their thought process and their character. Parents should
educate their children with moral values and positive influences such as family time, respect and
positive attitude. A child’s role model should be his/her parents. Improper parenting style
makes the children grow irresponsible and they can be at the risk of becoming delinquent
individuals in the future.
Holy Cross School & PU College, Whitefield, Bengaluru- 66

Parental Involvement in Child’s Education

Parental involvement is essential for the success of a child’s education. For a child to excel in
school their parents or guardians need to educate the child as much as a teacher. It is important
for the parents to understand the effect they have on their child’s education and how significant
their role is. Since the child learns as much from their parents as they do from their teacher, it is
important that the parents also stay educated and know the material the student is working on.
Thus, parents play a crucial role in the growth and development of a child. The values provided
by the parents, elders and teachers have to be ably supplemented by Value, Science and
Evidence-based Education provided to the child.

Socialization

Home is the first place where children are taught socialization. The interaction at home,
mingling with elders and younger children all help in defining how they interact with people.
Showing restraint, tolerating and being considerate of others all stem from their perception and
interaction at various levels. So the values that are taught at home will influence the child in
developing his/her personality. If parents are not able to instill discipline in their children, they
become uncontrollable and aggressive as they grow up. Socialization thus plays a vital role in
the upbringing of children.

Parent - Teacher Involvement

Teachers and parents find common goals for their children. They should work hand in hand for
the growth and development of the children. This partnership between parents and teachers
helps to tackle many problems the students are likely to face. The parents and teachers should
have a cordial and healthy relation with children. This helps the child to communicate
effectively with parents/teachers. Parental monitoring is vital for the child’s focused approach to
education. A parent should be well informed about the activities in school and they should be
included in decision making process. Parents who take active role are kept informed of the
progress made by their children. Teachers should provide opportunities for parents to give
feedback and responses in all aspects of teaching and learning.
Holy Cross School & PU College, Whitefield, Bengaluru- 66

Coping with Pressure of Studies and Exposure to Media

The boon or bane of our times is the competitiveness of the system and the huge exposure
through various media. It is indeed a fine balance needed so as not to put undue pressure on
children in the name of studies, yet get the best out of them in studies, sports or any sphere of
activity. Likewise, the influx of various media has thrust a lot of information on to young minds.
Exercising control and care in the nascent years itself to ensure children are exposed to age-
appropriate content only, would need more involvement from parents, but that investment of
time and effort would help in the formative years and later on for the child to make good choices
irrespective of the media or data that they have access to. Even democracy thrives on objectivity
and accountability and democratic values can only be upheld by objective choices rather than
prejudice or narratives.

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a
harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. ” Hebrews 12:11
