ADINOL CT-95 DS-117 September 24, 1996

ADINOL CT-95

INCI Name: Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate

ADINOL CT-95 is a mild anionic surfactant and offers excellent foaming, wetting and
dispersing properties. As a taurate, ADINOL CT-95 is recommended for surfactant
preparations that require excellent wetting and mild detergent action. ADINOL CT-95 is
produced using a manufacturing process that yields a product that is higher in purity
and lower in its content of salt and free amine. Such characteristics offer distinct
advantages in terms of quality, odor, color, and viscosity.

ADINOL CT-95 is the sodium salt of N-methyl taurine and conforms to the following
general formula:

O
||
RC-N-CH 2CH2SO3Na
|
CH3
"RCO" represents the coconut fatty acid radical.

ADINOL CT-95

Due to its mild cleansing action, ADINOL CT-95 is suitable for facial washes, body
washes and other such bath-type products. When used in these systems, ADINOL
CT-95 exhibits stable, high foaming, even in the presence of hard water, and imparts a
smooth and pleasing afterfeel on the skin. In shampoos, ADINOL CT-95 works well as
either a primary or auxiliary surfactant and can be used to improve the lather of these
systems and to provide hair with a silkier feel and better manageability.

While taurates have a variety of personal care applications, historically, they have
enjoyed wide use as foaming and wetting agents in oral care, primarily in mouthwashes
and toothpaste for sensitive gums. Taurates are highly desirable in gum sensitive
toothpaste because they are compatible with the strontium ion and can offset the
undesirable metallic taste of the water soluble strontium salts used in these
preparations. Because of their ability to do so, taurates are considered the foaming
agent of choice in gum-sensitive toothpaste.

Taurates appear to react similarly in the presence of calcium ions since they have been
shown to disperse or solubilize calcium soap/salts. Because of their tolerance to the
calcium ion, taurates can be very effective in neutralizing shampoos since they may be
able to remove the residual or excess calcium salts/soaps that remain in the hair after
a guanidine carbonate relaxer treatment. Should this be the case, taurates offer great
potential in Ethnic hair care. Use level: 0.5-10%
