Objectives
• A collection of psychological
theories that’s derived from the
basic propositions set forth by
Sigmund Freud in 1890-1930s but
has now evolved into many
different variations
• Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Carl
Jung, Karen Horney, Margaret
Mahler, etc
BASIC PREMISES OF PSYCHODYNAMIC THEORY
• THE ROLE OF THE UNCONSCIOUS. Human are driven by unconscious forces, motivations that are
beyond our awareness
• THE PAST. Childhood experiences and relationships shape our personality especially in how we
feel and behave in social and intimate relationships
• THE TENSION. Tension or “anxiety” happens because internal conflicts are bound to occur
particularly when our mind and feelings react differently with a particular person or situation
thus leading the person to make some mental compromise
• FORMATION OF THE “SELF”. The development of the self is possible only when we are able to
separate from the shadow of our early caregiver (parents) and individuate to form a self uniquely
our own
