DIVERSITY CONSCIOUSNESS
What is diversity consciousness?
diversity consciousness is the awareness of the diverse environment
we're surrounded with and therefore adjust a workplace that respects
and promotes it

Why is it important?
diversity consciousness is essential for the success of the work
environment as it creates a safe, tolerant space, helps people make
sensible decisions, and it builds stronger relationships.

BARRIERS TO SUCCESS
Lack of leadership-teamwork skills Poor relationships
Excessive workload assigning unclear tasks

Lack of leadership-teamwork skills

Proper leadership the work environment is crucial to manage the workplace. Otherwise, it
will not function. In addition, finding difficulties in collaborating with peers hinders success
as it limits one from handling larger tasks. Teamwork makes one achieve more with less
effort.
If a person with little to no leadership skills is hired, and a leading role is given to that
person, team members will have no idea what do. The business will be out of control and
it will eventually fail.
BARRIERS TO SUCCESS
Poor relationships
Good and healthy relationships with colleagues impact the mental status of employees
which contribute to improving performance. Poor relationships, in the other hand, create
a negative atmosphere and it also makes people unwilling to help and understand each
other.
if a business manager has a toxic relationship with his secretary, he might begin to be
less considerate with her and treat her unfairly. That secretary could also deal with
verbal, physical or sexual abuse if the relationship is terrible.
BARRIERS TO SUCCESS
Excessive workload
Excessive work stresses people out and it doesn't necessarily contribute to productiveness.
Such problems like absence, employee burnout, and anxiety arise from assigning too much
work at once. Excessive workload can even lead to more conflicts inside and outside the
workplace.
When a manager assigns an entire project to just one employee, that employee will
feel stressed and just end up doing nothing, especially if there isn't enough time.
BARRIERS TO SUCCESS
Assigning unclear tasks
Task uncertainty hinders teams from reaching potential success. When members don't
know what is expected of them, they will end up doing what they think is right, instead of
doing what is actually right.
Some instructors fail to explain the rubric well. In such scenarios, students are left
with so many questions in their head and it makes assignments much more difficult to
start and complete.

SETTING FAIR DECISION MAKING CRITERIA

In order to overcome problems that arise with diversity, the decision
making process has to meet the needs of all team members or
employees.
If a team considers the age and field of interest of each employee, the
team will distribute the amount of work fairly and thus succeed in
the tasks themselves as well as increase job satisfaction.
PROMOTE TEAMWORK
Teamwork isn't only essential for task completion, but it also helps with
building relationship and getting team members to know each other. As
members collaborate, the differences that lie in each individual will
seem to diminish, as if all team mates are a family.
If an instructor intentionally teams up students from different
backgrounds and interests, students will begin to get to know each
other and therefore understand the differences they have and
embrace them.
ENCOURAGE INTERACTION
Quite similar to teamwork, interaction gets people to know each other,
but the goal here isn't necessarily completing a task. Regular healthy
conversations about another field of interest, religion, or culture, can
help strengthen the bond among employees and get them to appreciate
the beauty in diversity.
If a workplace encourages culture days, the employees will feel
included and welcomed in their workplace.
AVOID UNCONSCIOUS BIAS
Sadly, unconscious bias is often unpreventable but it can be controlled
and limited. Being conscious about having "unconscious bias" is key to
overcome problematic scenarios.
familiarizing one's self with the differences in each member and
learning how to get used to diverse communities can help reduce
unconscious bias.
BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION
Different viewpoints Language
Different communication styles Personal conflicts

Different viewpoints
Different viewpoints mean that two people have two different perspectives. This is
very likely to happen if the work environment includes people from different
cultures. To avoid the problem, one must fully listen to what the other person is
saying.
For example, individualistic individuals value independence more than
collectivists do.
BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION
Language
Language is the most direct way of communication. If the speech of a person
is not understandable because that person speaks a foreign language or suffers
from speech difficulty, other people will not be able to understand anything.
hiring a person who doesn't speak the dominant language in a work
environment hinders effective communication.
BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION
Different communication style
cultures play a huge role on the preferred style of communication, whether
it's direct or indirect. Some cultures prefer using body language as opposed
to direct speech. This can sometimes lead to awkward situations as well as
misunderstanding.
Collectivists usually tend to have a hard time saying "no". Individualists, in
the other hand, don't. In this case, collectivists might find direct declines a
bit offensive.
BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION
Personal conflicts
Having a toxic relationship with someone because of an unpleasant event or
fight can limit one from communication, if not end it at all. Employees must
learn that communication is unavoidable ad that it is necessary to understand
others effectively.

HAVING A BRIDGE LANGUAGE

a bridge language is a language that allows groups of people to
communicate when their native tongue isn't shared. People in work
environments need to understand each other regardless of background.
assuring that employees can speak the same language (such as
English) eases understanding.
REMAIN AWARE OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
some cultures take care of the little things that may not matter much to
others. Understanding what different gestures mean to different
cultures may save you from awkward situations.
Supporting conversation with eye contact and hand gestures is
important, especially for collectivists.

WELCOMING QUESTIONS, ANSWERS AND COMMENTS

effective communication requires both parties, not just one. Having the
willingness to answer will and ask questions makes one appear welcome
and available. Be happy to help your coworkers with their problems.
if you're a manager and you lead employees, assure them that they
shouldn't hesitate to ask you a question.
PROVIDING SPEECH HEALTH CARE
a diverse community welcomes people from all sides of life, and this
includes people with disabilities. Providing proper treatment and care
for those who need it is essential in an inclusive environment.
offering speech therapy services in a workplace can make the life of
those who are suffering easier and it can help those who msy
encounter it later as well.
