WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

5 Properties of Normal Distribution

1. The graph is a continuous curve and has a domain -∞ < X < ∞.

2. The graph is asymptotic to the x – axis. The value of the variable gets closer and closer
but will never be equal to zero

3. Highest form of the curve occurs at x = mean (µ)

4. The curve is symmetrical about the mean.

5. The total area in the normal distribution under the curve is 1.

State the Empirical Rule

68.3 – 95.4 – 99.7% In

which:

• About 68.3% of the area under the curve falls within 1 standard deviation of the
mean
• About 95.4% of the area under the curve falls within 2 standard deviation of the
mean
• About 99.7% of the area under the curve falls within 3 standard deviation of the
mean

Construct a Normal Curve

For instance, the mean is 100, and the standard deviation is 10.
WHAT CAN I DO

1. P( 40 < X < 60 ) = 68.3%

2. P ( 10 < X < 30 ) = 95.4%

3. P ( 35 < X < 65 ) = 99.7%

WHAT’S NEW

1. What is the mean?

Figure A = 45 , Figure B = 0

2. What is the Standard Deviation?

Figure A = 6 , Figure B = 1

3. What is the Area of the Shaded Region?

Figure A = 68.3%, Figure B = 80.54%

4. What did you do to identify the area of the shaded region?

Figure A = By Empirical Rule , Figure B = By using the z – table

5. No

WHAT’S MORE

A.
Given Z – Score Approximate Area
1. x = 28 μ = 16 σ=5 2.4 0.9918 or 99.18%

2. x = 68 μ = 75 σ=5
-1.4 0.0808 or 8.08%
3. x = 1.72 μ = 1.6 σ = 0.2 0.6 0.7257 or 72.57%
4. x = 24 μ = 38 σ=8 -1.75 0.0401 or 4.01%

5. x = 50 μ = 45 σ=6 0.833 0.7967 or 79.67%

Solution for letter A:
B.

1. P (Z > -1.53) z = -1.53 has a corresponding

area of 0.0630 therefore, 1.0000 – 0.0630 =

0.937, and the P(Z > -1.53) = 93.7%

2. P (Z < 2.89) z = 2.89 has a corresponding

area of 0.9981

Therefore, the P(z < 2.89) = 0.9981 or 99.81%

3. P ( -1.65 < Z < 2.15) z = -1.65 has a

corresponding area of 0.0495 z = 2.15 has a

corresponding area of 0.9842

Therefore, 0.9842 – 0.0495 = 0.9392 and the P(-1.65 < Z < 2.15) = 0.9392 or 93.92%

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

How to Find the Probability using The Standard Normal Curve:

Using the/a given problem –

1. In the z-table, go down to the row with the first two digits of your z-score

2. Go across the column with the same third digit as your z-score

3. Find the value at the intersection of the row and column from the previous steps.

*you can also multiply it by 100 to get the percentage value. (ex. 0.7422 is the corresponding
area, multiply it by 100 to get the percentage value of 74.22%)
How to find the z-score:

Using a given problem –

1. Use the z-score formula and substitute the given value to the formula, the observed value
(x), the mean (µ), and the standard deviation (σ) will all be substituted to the formula.

2. Perform the operations and/or solve:

x−µ
𝑧= σ

3. Write the corresponding z-score

WHAT CAN I DO

1. The mean score and the standard deviation in the Statistics test are respectively equal to
80 and 2.5, whereas in the Mathematics test the mean score is 70 and the standard
deviation is 2. If Liza got a score of 85 in Statistics and a score or 75 in Mathematics in

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITES

1. The results of a nation aptitude test in mathematics are normally distributed with mean = 63
and standard deviation = 5. What is the 97.5th percentile?

Solution:

a. Express 97.5% as 0.9750

b. 0.9750 has a corresponding z-score of 1.96, therefore the distribution lies below z = 1.96

c. Construct a normal curve and shade the region to the left of 1.96.
