DRS8000 Series Recorders

Field Update Procedure

(UIC and Embedded System SW/FW)

1. Copy the self-extracting SB-XXX.exe update file to a device that will be accessible to the recorder
being updated. This can be a USB memory stick or network drive.
2. Double-click the .exe update file to automatically extract and create the SB-XXX update folder
(default is to extract on the same root directory as SB-XXX.exe resides). Be sure there is only one
SB-XXX folder that contains the update files and folders when the extraction step is complete.
Note: In some environments USB media and network shares are not permitted, in this case the
extracted SB-XXX folder can be copied to a CD/DVD media.
3. Attach a keyboard via the rear USB port of the DRS and boot up the recorder.
4. Shut down the UIC program, this will expose the Windows desktop.
5. Attach the device containing the update folder (or connect to it if on a network).
6. Open the SB-XXX folder on the media attached/connected to the DRS.
7. Double click the file named FieldInstall.cmd (or highlight it and press Enter) to execute the
update script which opens a command window (see below). Note: If the extracted SB-XXX folder
was copied to a non-writable media (CD or DVD) click the FieldInstall-NW.cmd. Observe no
errors reported. The update script will display the UIC and Embedded System versions. Make a note
of the user interface and embedded system versions, this information will be used in step 10 and 14.
At this point the operator will be prompted to continue the update, press any key on the keyboard to
continue.

8. The UIC will be automatically launched.
9. Press Sys and then Software buttons and verify that the User Interface version has updated as
expected. Note that the bottom of the system software screen will display SB-??? Indicating the
update has not been completed yet. The next steps will complete the update.
10. Press the Utils button, press the Update button, and then press the Open button. Highlight
the folder with the Embedded System (ES) version reported by the update script in step 7.
11. Press the gray Open button on the right-side of the screen, and then press the green Open
button. This action causes all the F/W files to be selected for download and will return the User
to the Update screen with the red Download button highlighted/active.
12. Press the Download button, the user will be prompted (yes or no) to download. Press the Yes
button and wait for all files to download. “Download complete” will be displayed in the upper
left corner of the screen which signifies that the update has completed. Note: This step may take
up to 95 minutes! Do not cycle power until you observe the “Download Complete.” An elapsed
time count is displayed on the Utils-Update screen during this step for the User to monitor
progress.
13. Once the download processes is complete, wait a minimum 10 seconds and then power-down
the recorder using the power-off switch.
14. Wait for 10 seconds and then turn on the recorder to reboot and return to operational status
with the UIC open to the initial screen.
15. Verify the software (UIC) and firmware (ES) update completed successfully by pressing the
Sys button, then press the Software button and review the software versions displayed (see
figure on page 3) and verify that the first four digits of User Interface, RAID, MUX, and
interface boards versions match the version numbers noted in Step 7. Note: As of SB-049, a
successfully updated DRS will also display the proper System Build version (e.g. SB-049). If the
update was not completed for some reason, then the System Build will display SB-???
16. The User must manually verify the Sys FPGA has been updated by noting that the last three
digits of the MUX firmware version reported are 3.42 or higher. See the figure on page 3. If the
version is older (lower number) then repeat steps 10 through 16 again to update the Sys FPGA.
