CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. INTRODUCTION

Rapid growth of grasses in our surroundings like in garden,

parks, and school grounds is oftentimes a nuisance because they

make the surroundings really messy and unconducive for playing

and other activities done on grounds. Moreover, get rid of these

grasses consume much money because is needed to hire a labourer

that will operate the grass cutter. The grass cutters that people

used at home and in schools are usually fuelled with gasoline,

which is very costly. The labourer or the worker that operates

the grass cutter would also be paid for his\her work.

Nowadays, different grass cutters are used. Various types of

grass cutter are reel mower, rotary mower, mulching mower, hover

mover, riding mower, and professional mower. The disadvantages of

different mowers are very costly and really unaffordable and may

caused fatigue to the workers when they cleaned for a large area.

Due to the researcher’s eager concern to the user and to the

environment, the researchers conducted a study about in tiled

“Pedal Grass Cutter” in order to lessen the amount of money that

people consume in buying gasoline and also hiring workers. This

product is more affordable since the materials used were easy to

find in our community. Most importantly, this research will help

people save their money on buying expensive mover; also it can

help the environment in recycling the old bicycle which is needed

is this product. At the same time it can help to exercise the

lower part of the body while using the bike to cut the grass.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study determined the problem in using pedal grass

cutter. More specifically, it will try to answer the following

questions.

1. What kind of blades needed in making pedal grass cutter?

2. What kind of grass will be cut using pedal grass cutter?

3. How fast will the pedal grass cutter cut the grass?

C. Objectives of the Project

This research aims to know the effectiveness of improvised

pedal grass cutter. The researchers did this project to help the

people to lessen the expenses also the school will benefit in

this research. Specifically, it aims to find on the following

objectives:
1. The researchers will find a technician to ask what blades

is needed to cut the grass.

2. After the researchers finish the product, the researchers will

conduct many trials on a different kind of grass to know what

kind of grass will be cut.

3. The researchers will test the speed according in what hour or

minutes will the pedal grass cutter cut grass on an area.

D. Significance of the Project

This study is beneficial on the following individuals.

Future Researchers. This study can serve as a reference material

for future researchers who are interested in conducting the

same study using a different materials or improving this study

which uses blades as main component.

Workers. This study can help them save their money on buying

gasoline. This can also help to them to not experience fatigue.

Future Users. They can pedal grass cutter whenever they want also

they can choose whether they want to hire someone to clean the

garden or if they just want to exercise.

 Scope and Delimitation

The researchers aims to make improvised grass cutter much

presentable and cheaper in the school or ground that may enable

less fortunate people buy even if they lacking in financial

sources. The researchers aim to find way to solve problem of

financial for grass cutting especially in schools by using

improvised pedal grass cutter .In a way that the school can use

pedal grass cutter to save money. And this research also intends

to build a stronger generation for the future researchers.

Definition of Terms

In order to fully understand this study, important terms

were elaborated below

Grass cutter. It is a machine, made for trimming the lawn or the

grass.

Lawn movers. Are designed to keep grass cut short but a good

rule is to never cut off more than one –third of the height of

the grass.

Blades. The flat, wide section of an implement or device such as

an oar or a propeller.
Sprocket. Each of several projections on the rim of a wheel that

engage with the links of a chain or holes in film, tape, or

paper.

Review of Related Literature and Study

A. Related Literature

C.B. MILLS: Today, new technology is bringing us improved

mover versions. Low emission gasoline engines with catalytic

converters are being manufactured to help reduce air

pollution. Improved muffling devices are also being

installed to reduce the noise pollution. Battery powered

mowers are also becoming practical. Although slightly small

with an average cutting swath of only 17-19th, these new

mowers will quietly cutting lawns without the common cloud

of blue smoke hanging in the air, for about an hour per

charge. Prices are comparable to a high-end gasoline powered

mower.

Edwin Beard Budding: Budding obtained the idea of the

lawn mower after seeing a machine in a local cloth mill

which used a cutting cylinder mounted on a bench to trim

cloth to make a smooth finish after weaving. Budding

realized that a similar concept would enable the cutting of

grass if the mechanism concept be mounted in a wheeled frame

to make the blades rotate close to the lawn’s surface.

 Ms. Lanka Priyanka: In this paper they have fabricate

grass cutting machine with tempered blades are attached to

this grass cutter. This grass cutter is manually operated as

well as automatic operated. The materials commonly used GI

sheet, motor, wheel, AI Sheet, switch, wire, square pipe and

insulating material.

P.Bulski: Bulski identify the sound created by the

machine is making noise pollution. He research on sound

created by the machine and giving the result how to remove

sound while cutting the grass of lawn or ground. As looking

to the petrol engine it make air pollution to environment so

his recommendation it should be implement on electric

operated lawn mower.

Praful P. Ulhe: In this paper they have prepared manually

operated grass cutter with spiral roller blades due to

spiral blades increases the efficiency of cutting.

B. Related Study or Related Project

The grass cutting machine is available in the various

types like reel (cylinder) mower, rotary and mulching mower,

hover mower, riding mower, professional mover, but these are very

costly and unaffordable. It required a skilled person to operate.

Hence, it was found necessary to have a grass cutter which can be

operated by electricity (motor) with minimum initial cost and can

be operated by unskilled labour. The newly developed grass cutter

was able to operate at an average speed of 2km/hr. without

disturbance in operation. The effective field capacity of the

machine was 0.07 ha/hr. (i.e. to move one hectare in 14.30 hr.)

with an efficiency of 70 per cent. 1 hp single phase electric

motor was sufficient to operate at working width of 500mm cutter

METHODOLOGY

The researchers gathered all the materials needed such as

sprocket ( big and small, chain, pedal, centre bearing, plate,

stainless blade, tube, and welding machine.

CONNECTING THE PARTS

The stainless were cut to become blade, and were connected

to real position. After cutting the blades, and attaching them

using welding machine, the technician attached the small sprocket

in front and the big sprocket at the back. The next step was the

researchers attached the chain to the big and small sprocket. The

reason why the researchers attached the big and small sprocket to

the chain was for the wheels and blade to rotate at the same

time.

SHARPENING THE BLADES OF THE GRASS CUTTER

The researchers used the grinding machine to sharpen the

blades of the grass cutter. It needed to be sharpened so that the

blade can be easily cut the grass.

TESTING THE PRODUCT

The researchers tested the product in the different shaggy

grass in the lawn. First, the researchers pedalled to the

After the improvised pedal grass cutter was formed, the

researchers’ test the ability and the speed in cutting grass.

The table shows that the Pedal Grass Cutter is more cost-

friendly than the commercial one.

 RESULT

The researchers observed that the Pedal Grass Cutter did

work properly the rotation of the blade is enough to cut only the

carabao grass.

DISCUSSION

The researchers tested the Pedal Grass Cutter into different

types of grasses. First, the researchers tested the Pedal Grass

Cutter in the amorseco lawn. The researchers observed that the

Pedal Grass Cutter did not cut the amorseco. Second, the

researchers tested the Pedal Grass Cutter in the paragis grass,

the researchers also observed that the pedal grass cutter did not

cut it. And last, the researchers tested the pedal grass cutter

in carabao grass which is common in our school. The researchers

observed that the pedal grass cutter did cut the carabao grass.

CONCLUSION

According to the test conducted, the researchers concluded

that the commercial grass cuter can cut different grass on field

but based on the expenses, the Pedal Grass Cutter is more eco –

friendly. The researchers also concluded that the pedal grass

cutter can use specially in school were the carabao grass can be

seen in field.

RECOMMENDATION
 The researchers recommended to the users to use the pedal

grass to save money made by the researchers enable to sustain

their purpose. The researchers recommend it to use in field

especially in school where there are many carabao grass. The

researchers also recommended to the future researchers to try

different kinds of blades enable to cut the different kinds of

grass.
