PART–B (5×16=80 marks)

11. (a) A steel bar, 300mm long, 40mm wide and 25mm (16)
thick is subjected to a pull of 180kN. Determine the
change in volume of the bar, if E=2×105N/mm2 and
Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

Or

(b) A reinforced concrete column 50×50cm in section is (16)

reinforced with 4 steel bars of 2.5cm diameter, one in
each corner. The column is carrying a load of 2MN.
Find the stresses in the concrete and steel bars. Take
Modulus of elasticity for steel and concrete as
2.1×105N/mm2 and 1.4×105N/mm2 respectively.

12. (a) A cantilever beam of 3 m long carries a UDL of (16)

12kN/m is spread over a length of 1.5m from the free
end. It also carries a point load of 15 kN at free end
and another point load of 8kN at 1 m from the fixed
end. Draw the shear force and bending moment
diagrams.

Or

(b) A simply supported beam of 6m span is subjected to (16)

two point loads of each 60kN at one third span. The
permissible bending stress for the beam material is
120N/mm2. Design the beam as a rectangular section
keeping breadth as half of depth. Neglect self weight
of the beam.

13. (a) A cantilever beam of 3m length and of uniform cross (16)

section 150mm wide and 300mm deep is loaded with
a 30kN load at its free end. In addition to this it
carries a uniformly distributed load of 20kN per metre
2
run over its entire length. Calculate, (i) The max.
slope and max. deflection. (ii) The slope and
deflection at 2 m for the fixed end. Take E=210
GN/m2.

Or

(b) A simply supported beam is carrying a load W at the (16)

centre. Calculate the slopes at its ends and the central
deflection, using conjugate beam method.

14. (a) A solid circular shaft transmits 75kW power at (16)

200r.p.m. Calculate the shaft diameter, if the twist in
the shaft is not to exceed 1º in 2 m length of shaft and
the shear stress is limited to 50MN/m 2. Take
C=100GN/m2.

Or

(b) A safety valve of 76 mm diameter is to blow off at a (16)

pressure of 1.12MN/m2. It is held by a close coiled
compression spring of circular steel bar. The mean
diameter is 152.5mm and the initial compression is
25.4mm. Find the diameter of the steel bar and the
number of turns necessary if the stress allowed is
126MN/m2 and C=79GN/m2.

15. (a) A cylindrical shell 3m long which is closed at the (16)

ends has an internal diameter of 1 m and a wall
thickness of 15mm. Calculate the circumferential and
longitudinal stresses induced and also change in the
dimensions of the shell if it is subjected to an internal
pressure of 1.5MN/m2. Take E=200GN/m2 and
Poisson’s ratio=0.3

Or

(b) The principal stresses at a point across two (16)

perpendicular planes are 75MN/m2 (tensile) and
35MN/m2 (tensile). Find the normal, tangential
stresses and the resultant stress and its obliquity on a
plane at 20º with the major principal plane.
