Test on Electromagnetic Induction and AC

40 marks 50 minutes

1.An electric drill is marked 220 V r.m.s., 870 W. Calculate:

a i the r.m.s. current in the wire connecting the drill to the mains [2]
ii the peak current in the wire connecting the drill to the mains [1]
iii the peak value of the potential difference across the drill. [1]
b Sketch a graph of the power drawn by the drill over one cycle of the current.
Mark on the graph the values of peak power and average power. [3]
2. a State Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. [2]
b Lenz’s law expresses an important conservation law.
Name this conservation law. [1]
c. A coil of cross-sectional area 5.9 × 10−4 m2 and 60 turns
is placed in a uniform magnetic field. The plane of the coil
is at right angles to the magnetic field. Calculate the
magnetic flux density when the flux linkage for the coil is
2.5 × 10−4 Wb. [3]
d The coil is placed in a magnetic field of flux
density 0.68 T. The normal to the coil is at an angle of 60° to the magnetic field, as shown in the
diagram. Calculate the flux linkage for the coil. [3]

4. A student has designed a full-wave rectifier circuit.

The output voltage for this circuit is taken across a resistor of resistance 100 Ω.
The variation of the output voltage with time is shown.

A capacitor is now connected across the resistor. The graph shows the new
variation of the output voltage with time.

a.Explain the variation of the output variation between points:

AB [1]
BC. [1]
b.Use the second graph to determine the value of the capacitance C. [3]
3. The rectified output from a circuit is connected to a resistor R of resistance 1200 ohm. Graph
A shows the variation with time t of the p.d. V across the resistor. Graph B shows the variation
of V when a capacitor is placed across R to smooth the output.

a.Explain how the rectification is achieved. Draw a circuit diagram to show the components
involved. [3+3]
b. Explain the action of the capacitor in smoothing the output. [3]
c. Using the graph B between t = 0.005 and t = 0.015, determine
i the time during which the capacitor is charging. [1]
ii the mean value of p.d. across R [1]
iii the average power dissipated in R [2]
5 A battery is connected via a switch to a coil P wound on a soft-iron core. Also wound on the
core is a second coil Q with a large number of turns. Coil Q is connected to a voltmeter. The
arrangement is shown in fig
The switch is operated so that the current in coil P changes with the time in the way shown in
fig. the magnetic flus in the core is proportional to the current in coil P. copy and complete
the graph to show variations with time of the magnetic flux in the second coil Q and
corresponding voltmeter reading.[3+3]
