ZERO AND IDENTITY PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION

Objectives: Show the zero property of multiplication.

Show the identity property of multiplication.

Review

Give the missing number.

1) 4 x 2 = ____ 2) 6 x 7 = ____ 3) 9 x ____ = 27

2 x ____ = 8 ____ x 6 = 42 3 x ____ = 27

4) (3 x 2) x 4 = ____ 5) (2 x 5) x 3 = ____
3 x (2 x 4) = ____ 2 x (5 x 3) = ____

Check your answer with the answer key. If your score is 4 or 5, you may
continue with this lesson. If you got 3 or below, review your past lessons

Study and Learn

A B
3 x 0 = 0 3 x 1 = 3
5 x 0 = 0 5 x 1 = 5
0 x 7 = 0 1 x 7 = 7
0 x 9 = 0 1 x 9 = 9

Look at box A.
To what common number are 3, 5, 7, and 9 multiplied? zero (0)
What did you notice with their products? They all have the same products
which is zero (0).

1
This is the zero property of multiplication. When we multiply a
number by zero, the product is zero (0), or we can say n x 0 = 0

Now, look at box B closely.

To what common factor are the numbers 3, 5, 7, and 9 multiplied?
They were multiplied by one (1).
What can you say with their products? The product is the same with
the other factor, like 3 when multiplied by 1 gets a product of 3, 5 with 1
has 5.

This is known as the identity property of multiplication. When we

multiply a number by one, the product is the number, in short n x 1 = n.

Try These

Give the product.

10 x 0 = ______ 82 x 1 = ______
12 x 1 = ______ 79 x 0 = ______
1 x 47 = ______ 0 x 45 = ______

192 756 4 482 5 402 6 472

x 0 x 1 x 1 x 0 x 1

Wrap Up

The zero property of multiplication states that any

number multiplied by zero is equal to zero.
The identity property of multiplication states that
any number multiplied by 1 is equal to the number.
